If you’re visiting FDR’s house, you can continue your excursion by driving north through a historic area called the Cove. This rich region was carved by a meteor billions of years ago. Pull off in Woodbury to see Georgia’s oldest covered bridge, then stop in Gay for an old gristmill and millpond.
Grab a tank of fuel, then travel back in time as you cruise through 60 miles of rolling farmland. Along the way, there are plenty of historic small towns to stop at, including Hawkinsville with its old opera house. If you’re lucky, you can catch a farmers market or even see a wild hog in Abbeville.
Providence Canyon is worth seeing, and if you take the slightly longer route to get there via 431, you’ll experience plenty of beautiful forested scenery along the way. You may even catch a few glimpses of the serene Chattahoochee River.
