The best way to travel through Europe?
I think so; here’s why James’s Tesla is the ultimate ride:
(TL;DR: *This* is the car you’re looking for!:)
First, James’s Model X has Unlimited Free Supercharging, which means you never pay for gas or electricity to run the car. This removes a huge travel stress: no surprise gas/currency conversion charges. Tesla’s Supercharger network is powered by 100% renewable energy-so it’s kind of like you’re riding on sunbeams! A few private Superchargers may not be free, but James/the navigation can help you easily avoid them.
The car also makes long-distance travel surprisingly comfortable. You can rest while charging, run heat/AC all night, and use the car’s unlimited internet for Netflix, music, etc. FYI, it does not create a hotspot for other devices, and remote areas may vary, but I had no real connectivity issues from London to Loch Lomond, and beyond…
I also used the car as a flexible travel base. I didn’t use a hotel for 11 days (I discussed “glamping” with James upfront, kept the car clean, and had access to showers, etc.:). This can save a ton if you plan responsibly. Pay close attention to parking rules; many rest areas/charging lots/car parks have strict 2–3 hour limits, and overstaying can often mean a fine of £100. Even if you use hotels, the car gives you flexibility if you are running late or want to linger somewhere beautiful.
If you are nervous about driving on the left, this car helps. Autopilot makes highways and some main roads much easier, though you still need to understand its limits/stay attentive. James knows the car extremely well and can walk you through it. He has prepaid for Full Self-Driving. FSD is already fantastic in the US: soon crazy UK roundabouts, unfamiliar roads, and nearly every other driving situation could become a breeze. When that happens, FSD might become the best/2nd-best feature on this list!
One tip: Brush up on UK road signs/roundabouts/lane rules before your trip. I planned my trip thoroughly, but still spent over a day learning how roundabouts and signs, etc. compare to the US. Many signs use symbols instead of words, which makes sense across different European countries-but takes adjustment. If you are still worried, James’s father is a professional driving instructor, so ask in advance about a lesson!
James himself is one of the biggest reasons I recommend this rental. He is friendly, knowledgeable, patient, and genuinely helpful. He can arrange pickup from Heathrow and other major airports about an hour away and, if he adds that option, the drive back through the countryside is a great chance to learn about the car with him. Some roads are narrow, old, charming “horse roads” in a please-do-not-let-another-car-appear-right-now kind of way, so having him demonstrate first helps. If you have never driven an EV/Tesla, he makes it fun instead of intimidating.
The Model X has plenty of miles, but that is nothing for an EV built for long-distance like this one. It has the expected minimal wear for a family car, but was clean, comfortable, well maintained-and still feels like you are driving in the future… The Falcon Wing doors are great if you want to make an entrance with a red, “Back to the Future” DeLorean vibe. If you prefer to stay low-key, it just looks like a sharp, sporty SUV. It has excellent storage and seats up to seven people, making it great for families, groups, solo travelers, or anyone with luggage. To understand why people love these cars, ask James, Google it, or fall into the Tesla YouTube rabbit hole…
James was as accommodating as I could have hoped for. I even got a chance to meet his family, who were wonderful. You could not ask for a better host, especially if you are unfamiliar with Teslas, EV charging, or driving in the UK. He may also allow travel into France, Italy, or other parts of Europe, if coordinated properly through Turo-though you should confirm extra mileage costs, border rules, insurance, and using the UK-side driver’s seat. Pick up your international driver’s permit before you go!
I would probably take public transit into London, but if you want to experience the country beyond Big Ben: cathedral hopping, Stonehenge, the charming countryside, historic sites, and whatever beautiful detour catches your eye-there is no better way than by car. This Tesla gives you freedom: stay longer wherever your wanderlust lands you (just charge it up extra for ultimate flexibility), and be truly present and open to what you encounter-instead of being locked into train, hotel, or other rigid schedules. It’s a vacation after all, isn’t it? A few software updates from now, it might even feel like having your own fancy British chauffeur. What could be better than that?;)
Can’t wait to read your own review and hear about your adventures. I gave James my number and am happy to answer questions as well. Hope you have a fantastic trip; renting James’s Tesla should really help make it a truly special one!:)
