Dear Turo Support,

I am writing to formally report a disastrous rental experience and to proactively defend myself against an unfair accusation from the host, who is trying to blame me for a pre-existing mechanical issue.

The moment I picked up the vehicle and drove out of the parking garage, it began to fail immediately. To be specific, upon releasing the clutch and pressing the accelerator, the car started to stutter and jerk violently, feeling as though it was completely losing power. Worse yet, from the very first moment I moved the car, it began emitting a strong burning smell – which is a classic sign of a severely worn or slipping clutch that was already damaged before my rental even started.

I called the host right away to explain the situation. Instead of acknowledging the problem, he dismissed my concerns, claiming it was impossible because he had recently changed the clutch. He instructed me to return the vehicle immediately. At that point, my friend, who was travelling with me to Oxford, told me very clearly that this car was not fit for our journey. He warned me that it would likely leave us stranded on the motorway, and strongly advised me to return it and find another rental instead.

However, I could not simply put it in reverse and hand it back on the spot, as the parking area left me no room to maneuver or turn around. I had no choice but to drive forward around the block to complete the turn, and I returned the car to the pickup location exactly 8 minutes later.

Here is the most critical piece of evidence: The person who received the car performed a test drive in my presence. I clearly noticed that the car tried to stall on them as well, and they had to struggle with the pedals just to keep it running. This proves beyond doubt that the defect was pre-existing and completely independent of my driving.

It is mechanically impossible to burn out or damage a healthy clutch within 8 minutes of normal departure driving – especially when the burning smell and power loss were already present at the very first takeoff, before I even left the parking area. To make things even clearer, after returning this vehicle, we went to a traditional rental company, rented another car, and completed our entire trip to Oxford without a single issue. That further confirms that I know how to drive manual transmissions perfectly well, and that the problem was exclusively with this particular car.

Given that the host has already blamed me for this, my concern is that he might now try to seek financial compensation from me for a problem that clearly predates my rental. I believe that would be completely unjustified, and I want to make sure Turo has all the facts to evaluate the situation fairly.

I kindly ask Turo to review this case objectively and consider the undeniable timeline I have detailed above: immediate failure at the very first takeoff, a burning smell present from the start, a forced 8-minute detour solely due to the lack of reversing space, and a failed test drive performed by the host's own associate. I trust these facts are sufficient to demonstrate that the issue was pre-existing, and I respectfully request that any compensation claim filed against me be rejected.

Thank you for your attention to this matter.

Sincerely,
Juan

Alex's response

Upon you returning the car I came back to it 7 hours later and could still smell the burning smell from the clutch I then drove the car and it was perfectly fine. It then went out for rental the following day and was fine. If you don’t know how to drive manual simply drive automatic until you learn as you will cause damage to vehicles

Excellent car. Excellent service. Great sound system. Great mileage!
