Driving in Newcastle follows standard UK road rules. For instance, vehicles drive on the left-hand side, and all drivers must have a valid driving licence. You should always be considerate of pedestrians and cyclists. The city has good roads and narrow historic streets, especially around Newcastle Castle and the Quayside, which require careful navigation. Using sat navs and following the road signs ensures smooth travel.

Parking options in Newcastle range from on-street metered bays to multi-storey car parks near the city centre, Newcastle station and popular attractions like the Discovery Museum. Prices vary depending on the location and duration, with short-term options ideal for shopping or sightseeing and longer-term spaces suitable for day trips or extended visits. Many car parks accept card and mobile app payments, while some areas have time restrictions to consider.

Are there toll roads in Newcastle upon Tyne?

No. There are no toll roads within Newcastle upon Tyne itself, so driving around the city and nearby areas is generally free. You can travel to surrounding destinations like Gateshead and Durham without paying additional road fees. However, if you drive further south or cross certain major bridges elsewhere in England, tolls may apply.

Are there petrol stations and EV chargers in Newcastle upon Tyne?

Yes, Newcastle upon Tyne has numerous petrol stations across the city and along main roads. Most stations provide different fuel types, including different grades of unleaded and diesel fuel. Electric vehicle (EV) chargers are increasingly common. You can find EV charge points located at shopping centres, public car parks and hotels around the central area. Rapid chargers are sometimes available for faster top-ups.

Do I need to rent a car in Newcastle upon Tyne?

Newcastle’s city centre is well served by the Metro and buses, but renting a car is ideal for exploring the surrounding North East England. A hire car makes day trips along the River Tyne and scenic drives to the Lake District or coastal towns simple.
