We had an excellent experience renting through Turo from Jaber. He was friendly, accommodating, punctual, and always willing to answer any questions we had before and during our trip. Communication was easy and prompt, which made the entire rental process stress-free. The car itself was reliable, comfortable to drive, and had excellent gas mileage, making it a great choice for our travels. Everything was exactly as described, and the vehicle was clean and well maintained. We would not hesitate to rent from Jaber again and highly recommend him to anyone looking for a dependable vehicle and outstanding customer service.

Top tips for renting a car in Nova Scotia

Nova Scotia is full of awe-inspiring scenery and charming small businesses, so you'll want to embrace every moment of your trip. This is why it's handy to brush up on the road rules of the province. Here are our top tips for getting around Nova Scotia.

What documents and paperwork do you need to rent a car in Nova Scotia?

To rent a car on Turo in Canada, you must create a Turo account, be 23 years old or older with a valid driver’s license, and get approved to drive on Turo. When you’re booking your first trip, you’ll go through a quick approval process by entering your driver’s license and some other information. In most cases, you’ll get approved immediately, and you’ll be set for future road trips, business trips, and family vacations!

What are the road rules and driving conditions in Nova Scotia?

Driving in Nova Scotia is calm and straightforward, with well-maintained roads, clear signage, and courteous drivers. Outside of Halifax, traffic is light, making it easy to enjoy scenic routes like the Cabot Trail and picturesque coastal drives at a relaxed pace.

There are a few things to watch for. Halifax can get congested during rush hour, some rural and historic roads can be narrow, and wildlife is common at dawn and dusk. A few intersections also have blind spots, so it’s worth driving cautiously in unfamiliar areas.

Nova Scotia follows standard Canadian traffic laws - seatbelts are mandatory, mobile phone use while driving is prohibited, and slower vehicles should keep to the right lane. Be mindful of speed limits, plan your route ahead of time, and allow extra time to stop for views or detours. Driving here is simple and scenic, perfect for a laid-back road trip.

Are there toll roads in Nova Scotia?

Yes, there is one toll highway in Nova Scotia. The toll highway is the Cobequid Pass on Highway 104.

Do I need to rent a car in Nova Scotia?

Yes, renting a car is highly recommended for exploring Nova Scotia. While there is some public transportation, it doesn’t reach many of the province’s scenic coastal towns, national parks, and hidden gems. With a rental car, you have the freedom to explore at your own pace and truly experience the variety of landscapes Nova Scotia has to offer.

A car makes it easy to reach beautiful spots like the Cabot Trail, Lunenburg, and Peggy’s Cove without relying on rigid bus or tour schedules. You can visit multiple attractions in one day, travel on your own time, and venture beyond the cities. While there’s a cost involved, the flexibility and convenience of having your own car make it the most practical way to see the province.
