The fifth-generation Prius Prime is a sleek plug-in hybrid with 220 hp and a knack for doing two jobs well. It runs on electricity for up to 44 miles on short trips, then switches to hybrid power when you head farther out. Among Toyota car rental options, it's the pick for electric commutes with a gas engine as backup.
On Turo, you book the exact Prius Prime you want from a local vehicle owner — no "or similar" surprises. Then you arrange pickup or delivery that fits your plans.
Prius Prime specs

Fuel economy
52 mpg combined
Acceleration
0-60 mph in 6.6 sec
Horsepower
220 hp
The Prius Prime combines gas and electric power for 220 combined horsepower and 139 lb-ft of torque. That's enough to reach 60 mph in 6.6 seconds — brisk for a car built around efficiency. It's front-wheel drive, so it feels familiar from your very first merge.
The Prius Prime can cover up to 44 miles on electricity alone in the SE trim, drawing from a 13.6 kWh lithium-ion battery. For many daily errands and commutes, you may never need the gas engine at all (quiet mornings included).
Once the battery runs down, the Prius Prime shifts into hybrid mode and returns up to 52 mpg combined. The gas engine picks up where the battery leaves off, so a longer drive stays on schedule. Plug in again, and you're back to electric miles for your next round of errands.
The fifth-generation Prius Prime arrived for the 2023 model year with a full redesign. A sweeping roofline and low stance give it a sharp, modern profile you'll notice the moment it pulls up to the curb.
Practicality still made the cut, too. As a hatchback, it offers 20.3 cubic feet of cargo space with the rear seats up, and it seats five. That's room for carry-ons, groceries, or a weekend's worth of bags — without stepping up to a bigger vehicle.
The Prius Prime makes a smart rental when you want efficiency without giving up range. Use it for city commutes on electric power, weekend getaways on hybrid power, or a test run before you buy a plug-in of your own. On Turo's car rental marketplace, you can book one for a day, a week, or longer.

Easy charging, driver-assist tech, and a hybrid heritage set the Prius Prime apart.
You can charge the Prius Prime from a standard 120-volt outlet or a 240-volt Level 2 charger. No special equipment is required, so you can top up from a regular wall outlet wherever you're staying.
One thing to know: the Prius Prime doesn't support DC fast charging. For road trips, plan on the gas engine to carry you between stops — that's exactly what it's there for. Think of electric miles as your around-town bonus and hybrid mode as your long-haul partner.
Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 comes standard on the Prius Prime, so driver-assist tech is part of the package no matter which trim you book. You get that peace of mind from the first mile.
Inside, the available 12.3-inch touchscreen puts a big, clear display front and center. Add the available JBL audio system, and your playlist sounds as good on the highway as it does at home. Check the listing to see which tech your Prius Prime includes, since equipment varies by trim.
The Prius name carries real history. The original Prius, launched in 1997, was the world's first mass-produced hybrid. The Prius Prime joined the lineup in 2016 and added a plug to that proven formula, giving drivers electric miles on top of hybrid efficiency.
Today's Prius Prime builds on that legacy with its fifth-generation design. Top trims offer an available solar roof — a fitting nod to its efficiency-first roots. When you book one, you're driving the latest chapter of a story that started in 1997.

I am so glad I found this car. The Prius is great. I was also glad to meet the owners when I picked it up because I was new to this type of car, and having someone show me the features made it much easier to get started. I brought a phone holder so I could use navigation and connect my phone to the car, which was very helpful, especially if you are used to relying only on Waze. The Prius is a very comfortable car, and I was excited to try out a hybrid for the first time. Unfortunately, I didn’t have access to charging, so I couldn’t take full advantage of that feature. We also agreed with the owners that I could return the car at a different parking lot, which made it much easier for me to get to the airport. The parking lot even provided a shuttle ride to the airport, which was very convenient. I would definitely rent this car again. Overall, it was a very good experience. Yes, there were a few creaks here and there, but that’s normal for a used car that has had different drivers over time. I didn’t find anything that limited or bothered me during the trip. Thank you for a great first experience with your car & Turo.
The car ran great!!! Felt super safe in it. Saved on so much gas. Responsive and easy to work with

Car was fantastic. No issues at all. Drop off at my hotel was awesome and super convenient. Would definitely rent again.

Carl was a great host. This was my first time using Turo and I was still figuring out how it works and they were super helpful and responsive. The Prius is adorable (I love the color!), in great condition and gets great gas mileage

A little prep goes a long way with a plug-in hybrid. Here's what to check before and during your trip.
Start by checking the year and trim in the listing. The SE offers up to 44 miles of electric range, while the XSE and XSE Premium deliver about 39–40 miles.
Want something different? A Toyota Prius hybrid rental gives you hybrid efficiency without the plug. If you'd prefer a traditional sedan, try a Toyota Camry midsize sedan, or go bigger with a Toyota Highlander family SUV.
Make the most of every mile with these tips:
Check the charge level at pickup.
Look in the listing details for charging cable info.
Use EV mode for city driving.
Plan fuel stops on road trips, since DC fast charging isn't supported.
Get familiar with the controls before you drive off.
The price of a Prius Prime rental depends on the year, trip length, Extras you add, and delivery. Book at least four days ahead and choose a non-refundable trip to save 10%.
Listings can also offer discounts on trips of three days, one week, or one month. Planning a longer stay? Trips of 30 days or longer have no trip fee, except in parts of Los Angeles and New York. Learn more about long-term car rental.
