The biggest thing to know about driving in Boston is that it can be congested and challenging. The streets of central Boston are compact and narrow, designed back in Colonial times. Plus, as a city designed for cyclists and pedestrians, the Boston CBD can be tricky to navigate.
Our tip? Avoid driving at peak hours in Boston (typically 6 am to 10 am and 4 pm to 7 pm), rent a compact car that can easily navigate the tight CBD streets, and keep an eye out for HOV or carpooling lanes on highways (which are great if you're traveling with two or more passengers).
When driving in Boston and the rest of Massachusetts, make sure to stick to the legal speed limits (25 mph to 50 mph), ensure everyone is wearing their seat belt at all times and ensure your phone is in hands-free mode when driving.
There are plenty of parking garages dotted across Boston, which makes finding a parking spot straightforward. Look out for the parking garage at Post Office Square or One Beacon Garage, perfectly positioned along Tremont Street with easy access to some of Boston's best restaurants.
Street parking is another viable option in Boston, with parking spots usually free on Sundays (just make sure to check the street signage). You'll also find over 7,000 parking spots across Boston via the ParkBoston app.
Yes, there are several toll roads to look out for when driving in Boston. The five major toll roads in Boston include The Massachusetts Turnpike, Callahan Tunnel, Sumner Tunnel Toll, Ted Williams Tunnel and Tobin Memorial Bridge. Driving with an E-ZPass can make navigating these toll roads a breeze, with automatic charges made as soon as you zip through the toll gates.
There are plenty of places to refuel in Boston, with gas stations located on E Berkeley Street, Boylston Street and Huntington Avenue. If you're hiring an electric car or hybrid vehicle, you'll find ChargePoint Charging Stations on Nashua Street and Shawmut Avenue.
While Boston's city center is compact and walkable, renting a car is the most convenient way to explore the must-see sights of Massachusetts. Plus, having your own car means you can easily take a day trip to some of the top nearby destinations across the state, including the quaint seaside town of Cape Cod.
Unlike traditional car rental companies, you can select the exact car make and model you want to rent on Turo. From sporty SUVs to sleek small cars and even luxury EVs, there's no shortage of top-notch options to choose from, available to rent for any length of time in Boston.
At Boston Logan International Airport, you'll find a wide range of car types, including the following vehicle classes:
- Compact cars: Weave through the narrow Boston CBD streets behind the wheel of a small, compact car such as a Toyota Prius, Volkswagen Golf or MINI Countryman.
- Electric cars: With plenty of EV charging stations dotted across Boston, hiring a Tesla Model 3 is an ideal choice.
- SUV rentals: Experience a luxurious driving experience behind the wheel of an SUV rental in Boston. Choose from popular makes and models like a Mazda CX-90, Volvo XC90 or BMW X4.
The cost of car rental in Boston can vary depending on car type, booking length, extras, and delivery. For cheap car rentals in Boston, look out for discounts on longer-duration bookings and early bookings.
