Communication was great throughout. Pick up and drop off was easy as they came to us and allowed us to return to a different location. The car itself was exactly as described and was such a fun way to experience the Great Ocean Road. Much better than a regular car rental. Highly recommend.

Nissan LEAF 2016

Dan was a reassuring host, responding quickly and helpfully to queries during my trip.. He's an enthusiast in electric vehicles and I enjoyed a long yarn with him. The car I drove was from 2016, and is best suited to city traffic.. Excellent economy!, When I took it for a spin along highways in central Victoria it chewed quickly through the battery power, compared to recently manufactured electric vehicles. It definitely needed recharging more often with the fast speeds and hills. The 2016 Leaf isn't one of those vehicles that accelerate faster than petrol cars. It wasn't designed that way. Hire a recent model for that. It's so easy to drive with very good visibility, and a reversing camera.. Familiar to petrol car drivers, but less complicated. A pleasure. Comfortable and clean. big cabin, small boot. The back seats fold down if you need the space. Dan kindly provided both types of charging cables, yay. I enjoyed my opportunity to drive a Leaf. Why use petrol when I ve got the choice. 😊

Top tips for hiring a car in Melbourne

Hiring a car in Melbourne can allow you to explore the city and its surroundings at your own pace. To make the most of your car hire experience, here are some handy tips to remember.

Navigating in and around the airport

Your journey navigating around Melbourne airport depends on which airport you arrive at. Melbourne's primary airport, Tullamarine Airport, is strategically located about 23 kilometres from Melbourne's city centre, making it easily accessible for both domestic and international travellers.

Alternatively, Avalon Airport is located further away from Melbourne CBD in Geelong, welcoming both domestic and international arrivals.

Upon arrival, an array of clear signage and information points guide passengers through terminals, baggage claim areas, and transportation options. For those looking to reach the city centre, various transport choices are available, including taxis, rideshare services, and dedicated shuttle bus (known as SkyBus) services that connect the airport to key locations in Melbourne.

For those who prefer the freedom of their own transportation, renting a car is a popular option. Skip the Melbourne Airport car rental line, and hire a car in Melbourne on Turo. With options like airport delivery, extras and free cancellation, you'll have the flexibility to explore Melbourne and its surroundings at your own pace. The airport's well-designed road infrastructure also ensures that visitors can easily connect to major highways and roads, allowing for smooth transitions between the airport and their intended destinations.

Melbourne's road rules

The road rules in Melbourne match the rest of Australia. Australians drive on the left side of the road and speed limits vary depending on the type of road and area. Residential zones usually have lower speed limits, while major roads and highways have higher limits.

The legal blood alcohol concentration (BAC) limit for fully licensed drivers in Victoria is 0.05 (the same as the rest of the country), and you aren’t allowed to use your phone while you’re driving. Not to mention, be sure to keep left unless overtaking on all multi-lane roads with a speed limit above 80km/h.

Hook turns:

While exploring Melbourne City, the concept of a hook turn might seem a little bizarre. It's essentially a right-hand turn at an intersection. But, instead of using the right lane to turn, when you see a hook turn sign, you stay in the left lane and signal your intention to turn right.

Melbourne’s rush hour, busiest roads and tolls roads

Curious about Melbourne's busiest roads and rush hours to avoid? Melbourne City experiences a lot of traffic during rush hours in the early mornings between 7:30 am and 9:00 am and during the late afternoon and evening rush between 4:30 pm to 6:30 pm.

Some roads that experience high traffic include Hoddle Street, Monash Freeway (M1), Eastern Freeway (M3), CityLink, West Gate Freeway and Kings Way. Consider using public transport or holding off travel outside of peak times when exploring Melbourne CBD.

Toll Roads in Melbourne and the state of Victoria provide a convenient way to travel quickly between destinations. Some major toll roads include CityLink, EastLink and Peninsula Link.
