Car rental in Edinburgh Castle, Scotland on Turo

Car rental near Edinburgh Castle on Turo

Edinburgh Castle sits high on its Old Town rock, and you can reach it on foot once you're in the city. The real reason to have your own car is everything past the ramparts — the Highlands, the coast, and the string of castles and glens that trains and buses can't reach on your schedule. With a car, the view from the battlements becomes the start of the trip, not the whole of it.

From the castle, a car opens up Rosslyn Chapel to the south, Stirling Castle to the north-west, and the wide beaches of the East Lothian coast to the east. It also makes a quick run west to Glasgow an easy afternoon rather than a logistical puzzle. You choose where to go and when, without waiting on the next departure.

Edinburgh Castle, Scotland car rental: How it works

Whatever brings you to Edinburgh Castle, there's a car on Turo to match the trip. The right choice depends on how far you're going and who's coming along. From a weekend in the Old Town to a slow tour of the glens, matching the car to the plan makes the whole trip easier.

We had a wonderful day exploring the highlands because we were able to rent a car from Shahzad! He was wonderful to communicate with. We had some difficulty working the hybrid style, as it is different than what we were used to, and he called within minutes to help us. I would absolutely rent from him again!

Used this car for our 9 day roadtrip around the Scottish highlands including isle of Skye, Edinburgh and glencoe. It was perfect. Great on gas, only filled up 3-4 times. And trust me we got our moneys worth in terms of mileage we moved around a lot. No problems at all. Small and compact for city parking, durable and perfect for what we needed. The host, Faz was extremely helpful and goes above and beyond to ensure everything is taken care of. Even helped us with our airport transport which was not necessary but much appreciated and clutch 🙏🏻 if we ever return to Scotland we’ll likely look to rent this car again.

Car was great, no squeaks or rattles, fuel mileage was 45mpg with a big roofbox on top over 700 miles around Scotland. Maneuverable and peppy, the sound system is very balanced and the Bluetooth connects automatically once you pair it. The host was lovely, even gave us blankets to have in case we stop somewhere and want to sit on the grass. Had no problem with our slight delay on the way back. Would definitely recommend booking with her : )

Things to do and places to see in Edinburgh Castle, Scotland

Edinburgh Castle, Scotland

Rosslyn Chapel

Rosslyn Chapel is a richly carved 15th-century chapel in the village of Roslin, roughly seven miles south of the castle. Its stonework rewards a slow, unhurried visit, and the surrounding countryside makes the short drive a pleasure in itself. Direct public transport is limited, so a car — with on-site parking at the chapel — is the easiest way to arrive on your own timetable.

Stirling Castle

Stirling Castle is a commanding hilltop fortress about 37 miles north-west of Edinburgh, and it pairs naturally with a day built around Scottish history. With a car, you can leave early and spend the morning on the ramparts. You can even add a stop at the Kelpies or Loch Lomond on the way back. Leaving under your own steam is what makes that kind of full day possible.

North Berwick and the East Lothian coast

North Berwick is a breezy seaside town about 25 miles east, with sweeping beaches, the cliff-top ruins of Tantallon Castle, and the Scottish Seabird Centre. A car turns the coast into a proper day out, letting you string several stops together at your own pace. Parking is far easier out here than in the city centre, so you can pull in wherever the view is best.

Car rentals for any occasion

Holiday and leisure trips

For a holiday that starts at the castle and stretches into the Highlands and coast, comfort and space matter. An SUV rental gives you room for luggage, walking boots, and passengers on the longer drives north. It's a comfortable, capable choice for days spent covering ground between Edinburgh and the hills.

Special occasions and events

Arriving for a wedding, a milestone birthday, or a night at the Fringe or Hogmanay deserves a car that fits the moment. A luxury car rental lets you pull up near the castle in something memorable. It's an easy way to make a special day in Edinburgh feel like one.

Long-term stays

If you're settling in for a month or relocating, long-term car rentals keep you mobile without a daily scramble. Extended bookings suit slow Scotland tours, remote-work stints, and relocations based in Edinburgh. You get the freedom to explore on weekends and run errands during the week.

Edinburgh Airport (EDI)

Edinburgh Airport is the nearest airport, about eight miles west of the castle and the natural place to start if you're flying in. Book a car at Edinburgh Airport (EDI) and pick it up soon after you land. From there you can drive straight into the city or on towards the hills. It saves you a transfer and puts you in the driver's seat from the moment you arrive.

Edinburgh city centre and Old Town

If you're staying near the castle, you can arrange pickup or delivery close to Waverley station, the Royal Mile, or a city-centre hotel. Keep in mind that the Old Town sits inside Edinburgh's low emission zone, so confirm your car meets the standard or arrange delivery just outside the zone. That small check keeps your first drive smooth.

Leith and the waterfront

For stays north of the centre, Leith and the Ocean Terminal area make a handy pickup point with easier parking than the Old Town. It's well placed if you're heading straight for the East Lothian coast or the road north. You can collect the car and be on the coastal road in minutes.

Top tips for renting a car near Edinburgh Castle

Road rules and driving conditions

In Scotland you drive on the left, and speed limits are posted in miles per hour. Much of central Edinburgh runs at 20 mph, rising to 30 on wider urban roads and 60 or 70 on rural roads and motorways. The Old Town streets around the castle are narrow, steep, and often cobbled or pedestrianised, so take them slowly and expect walkers everywhere.

Parking

Parking in central Edinburgh is limited and pricey, with metered, controlled bays across the Old Town and New Town. Your easiest option is a car park or park-and-ride just outside the centre, then walk or take the tram in. Out in North Berwick or Stirling, parking is far simpler, which is part of what makes a car worth having.

Toll roads

Good news for your budget: Scotland's motorways and major bridges are toll-free. You can cross the Queensferry Crossing or the Forth Road Bridge on your way north without paying a charge. That keeps day trips out of the city refreshingly straightforward.

Petrol stations and EV chargers

Petrol stations cluster around the city fringe and along the main routes out of Edinburgh, so top up before you head into the hills. Charging is plentiful too, and electric vehicles are exempt from Edinburgh's low emission zone — a real advantage in the city centre. If you book an electric car, plan a charge before longer runs north or west.

Do I need to rent a car near Edinburgh Castle?

Not to see the castle itself — the Old Town is compact and walkable. You'll want a car for everything beyond it: the Highlands, the coast, and day trips to places like Dundee that are slow going by public transport. If your plans reach past the city, a car is what makes them realistic.

Frequently asked questions

What documents and paperwork do I need to rent a car near Edinburgh Castle?

You need a full, valid physical driving licence and a confirmed booking on Turo. International guests should also carry a passport or photo ID. Bring the physical licence itself, as a digital version isn't accepted.

What kind of licence do I need to rent a car near Edinburgh Castle?

You need a full, valid physical driving licence. That means a UK or EU licence held for at least one year, or another country's licence held for at least two years. Digital licences and provisional or learner permits aren't accepted.

What are the age requirements to rent a car near Edinburgh Castle?

The minimum driver age is 21, with no upper age limit beyond 74. As long as you meet the licence requirements, you're eligible to book a car near the castle.

How does insurance work when renting a car near Edinburgh Castle?

Protection plans are offered when you book a car on Turo, so you can choose a plan as part of the booking. Terms, conditions, and exclusions apply, and you can review the details before you confirm.

Are discounts available when renting a car near Edinburgh Castle?

Yes — weekly and monthly bookings often come with a lower daily rate than booking a single day at a time. If you're staying a while, longer bookings are usually the better value.

Is there long-term car rental near Edinburgh Castle?

Yes. You can book monthly and long-term rentals for a month or more, which suits relocations, extended stays, and slow tours around Scotland. Longer bookings often come with reduced daily rates, too.

Is there unlimited mileage car rental near Edinburgh Castle?

Sometimes. Some cars on Turo include unlimited miles, while others offer it as an added Extra you can select at booking. Check the individual listing to see what's included before you book.

Can other people drive the car I rent near Edinburgh Castle?

Yes, additional drivers can be added to your booking. Add them yourself in the Turo app so each driver is approved before your trip. Every additional driver needs to meet the same age and licence requirements.

How much does it cost to rent a car near Edinburgh Castle?

Prices vary by car, dates, and how long you book, so the best way to see real costs is to search your dates on Turo. Everyday cars generally cost less per day than premium or luxury models, and weekly or monthly bookings usually bring the daily rate down.

What rental car types are available near Edinburgh Castle?

You'll find a wide range of cars on Turo to match your trip, including:

SUV — spacious and comfortable for Highland day trips, luggage, and larger groups.

Electric vehicle — quiet, efficient, and exempt from Edinburgh's low emission zone.

Van — extra room for groups, gear, or a move across the city.

Minivan — seating for larger families and groups travelling together.

Luxury — a memorable choice for weddings, celebrations, and special arrivals.

Is monthly car rental available near Edinburgh Castle?

Yes. You can book a car by the month around Edinburgh, which works well for long stays, relocations, and extended tours. Monthly bookings often carry a lower daily rate than shorter trips.
