Edward has been so so kind and nice, helpful all along from the beginning to the end of this trip. I would highly recommend him to anyone who wants to rent a car. He gave us all the valuable insights about traveling as well. He even offered a lift going back to the city(maybe it's because it was too late) anyway, he was the best guy on Turo.

The car worked well and the host was attentive and organized. I just wish I had realized prior that the car was not at the airport, but you are sent an Uber to and from the airport. The host pays for this, but it does add time onto getting to and from where you are going. Probably not a big deal for many people but might have changed my selection of companies.

We rented the M3 for two days for a trip up to the Bathurst circuit. The booking process was slick and friendly with a combination of automated and personal messages. Ben personally handed over the car, set up my iPhone and explained the key driving controls. The car was clean and well maintained. Ben kept in touch during our trip and answered our questions on tolls and suspension settings quickly. Ben was not available to receive the car back but the return process was clearly explained. I would recommend Ben.

Top tips for renting a car in Sydney

Before you hit the road in your Sydney car rental, it's worth understanding how driving works in this busy city, from local speed limits to tolls, parking, and finding petrol or charge while out and about.

How does airport pickup work near Sydney Airport?

At Sydney International Airport, you can collect your rental car from Turo from a pre-arranged off-airport location, such as a nearby hotel, shopping centre, or local street. No need to waste time at the car rental desks — once you touch down in Sydney, simply grab your bags, find your rental vehicle, and start exploring the Big Smoke in no time.

How does drop-off work near Sydney Airport?

Once your Sydney visit is over, head back to Sydney Airport to return your car rental to your Turo host. Prior to finishing your trip, get in touch via the Turo app to double-check they're happy to make the switch-over at the same location you picked up from, or to arrange an alternative spot that's convenient for you both. If you're parking in a secure car park, take a ticket when you enter and leave it in the vehicle so your host can use it to exit safely. Stash the keys in a drop box, and you're ready to board your waiting flight.

How far is Sydney Airport from the CBD?

Sydney Kingsford Smith Airport is about 8 kilometres from the city centre. Depending on traffic, the drive usually takes around 15 to 25 minutes, though it may be a bit longer during peak-hour congestion.

What are the road rules and driving conditions in Sydney?

Road rules in Sydney are typical for New South Wales: keep left, always wear a seatbelt, obey road signage, and don't use a handheld mobile phone while driving, even to check your maps app. Speeding is taken seriously across Australia, with many fixed and mobile speed cameras around. Built-up areas generally have a 50 kilometres per hour (km/h) limit unless otherwise signed.

In some local traffic zones, particularly in the inner city, the limit is 40 km/h, and there are shared zones where the speed limit can be as low as 10 km/h. Speed limits then range from 60 to 80 km/h on wider suburban roads and climb to between 100 and 110 km/h on motorways.

Motorways like the M1, M2, and M4 make it easy to get around Sydney's outer suburbs, but they can get very busy during peak periods. Expect congestion at all times, but particularly when heading in and out of the city in the mornings and evenings.

Sydney has a few unique road rules — for instance, you cannot speed up if you notice another driver trying to overtake you, and interestingly, you cannot hang any part of your body outside of your car window.

What is parking like in Sydney?

Parking in Sydney's CBD can be challenging. You'll find paid parking in multi-storey garages around Martin Place, Circular Quay, and Darling Harbour. Many of these options are very expensive, so it often pays dividends to book ahead of time, or if you can handle a quick commute, park your hire car outside of the CBD itself and take the train or bus in. Reliable options include the Wilson Parking garages at 201-207 Kent Street, 60 Elizabeth Street, and Quay West (111 Harrington Street).

For cheaper or longer-term options, consider parking in suburbs like Surry Hills or Paddington where there are more street spaces — just make sure to check local signage for restrictions, as many areas are permitted for residents only.

Are there toll roads in Sydney?

Yes, Sydney has several toll roads, including the M5, M7, M2, and parts of the M4 and Eastern Distributor. Toll costs vary depending on the route and time of day.

Where can I find petrol stations and EV chargers in Sydney?

You'll find plenty of petrol stations across Sydney. Major brands like BP, Shell, and Caltex are common on key routes like Parramatta Road, Oxford Street, and Anzac Parade. If you need a quick fuel-up as you're entering or leaving the city centre, try the Shell at 387-427 Wattle Street in Ultimo, or the Budget Petrol at 70 Regent Street in Chippendale.

Electric vehicle (EV) charging is growing quickly in Sydney, with public chargers available through networks like EVX, ChargeFox, and AmpCharge. Common spots include charging bays in multi-storey car parks located around the CBD, as well as suburban shopping centres like East Village and Westfield Bondi Junction. In the city itself, there's a handy charger at the Queen Victoria Building (455 George Street) for when you're in a pinch.

Do I need to rent a car in Sydney?

Sydney has a well-established public transport network, with trains, ferries, buses, and a growing light-rail system that makes it easy to get around without a car. That said, a hire car gives you flexibility to explore beyond the city — think coastal drives to Bondi or the Northern Beaches, or weekend trips up to the Blue Mountains. Whether you're a local or a visitor, having your own vehicle rental makes it possible to see the real Sydney, not just the one pictured in magazines or on TV.

What rental car types can I find on Turo in Sydney?

Hire a car at Sydney Airport with Turo and choose from a wide range of vehicles, including budget-friendly compact cars, roomy SUVs, premium models, and everything in between. For max comfort, opt for something spacious like the Mahindra XUV700. Prefer to zip down gorgeous coastal roads in a car that really stands out? The BMW 118d Convertible is sure to draw attention.

If you’re carting kids to school and back or travelling around New South Wales with a group, you'll also find minivans, cargo vans, extended SUVs and more to suit your journey. There are even popular hybrid and electric vehicles ready to rent on Turo, such as the Toyota RAV4 and the Tesla Model 3. Whatever you choose, you're bound to love the flexibility, convenience, and freedom that come with booking on the Turo marketplace compared to other car rental companies.

How much does it cost to rent a car in Sydney?

The cost of car rental in Sydney can vary depending on car type, booking length, extras, and delivery. For cheap car rental in Sydney, look out for discounts on longer-duration bookings and early bookings.
