Overall, the trip went smoothly, but there were several issues with the vehicle that caused a significant amount of stress and took away from what should have been a relaxing vacation.
On the second day of our trip, the check engine light came on. We contacted the host immediately and were told not to worry about it. While I appreciated the prompt response, it was difficult to feel comfortable continuing to drive the vehicle for the rest of our trip with a warning light illuminated, especially while traveling long distances.
Unfortunately, we also got a flat tire after running over a screw. I understand that can happen to anyone and don’t fault the host for that. However, dealing with roadside assistance took over six hours, resulting in us losing a substantial portion of our vacation. We then had to continue driving on the spare tire, only to discover it was not properly inflated. That created additional concern that the spare could also fail before we were able to have the tire replaced.
Beyond those issues, the vehicle itself did not appear to be in great condition. The seats were torn, the air conditioning worked inconsistently, the engine made a noticeable ticking sound, and at one point the transmission would not shift out of first gear. Combined with the illuminated check engine light, these issues made us question the vehicle’s overall reliability.
By the time we returned the vehicle, we had spent a significant amount of time and money dealing with problems that greatly impacted our trip. Although the host was responsive throughout the rental, the mechanical issues and the condition of the vehicle left us feeling uneasy for much of the experience. Had the check engine light come on before we were already halfway between Edmonton and Grande Prairie, I would have returned the vehicle and requested a replacement.

Host was responsive. Pick up and drop off very convenient. The car worked. As far as we know, the AC didn’t work, and the rear suspension might need some attention.
