The host was responsive and quickly answered any questions I had before picking up. He was at home and we walked around the car together. It appeared well taken care off and was very clean, inside and out.

Be aware that this is a vehicle with lots of kilometers. At the time of renting (first week of August) it had 272,000 kms on it and came equipped with Chinese made budget WINTER tires. When I mentioned it to the owner, he shrugged it off, saying it was not that hot.

Driving the car it became clear quickly that Consumer Report's original review was accurate: "Outdated and outclassed, the Outlander struggles to compete". Even though this is a 2020 model it actually feels more like 10-15 years old. The ride is very bouncy, leading to a queasy ride. The infotainment system locks you out of the simplest functions when driving. We were unable to clean the windshield because the spray nozzles overshoot and instead seem to be aimed to wash the roof of the car. There is very dark tint on all windows, including the rear. As a result the rear-view mirror is almost unusable and things are difficult to make out. The seats are not comfortable, apparent quickly on our 3-hour drive. The engine is underpowered, jumpy off the line, struggles on inclines and still does not offer decent fuel economy.

On the positive side the interior is spacious, including the cargo area and the roof crossbars let us put a basket on top.

We took it to a campground and left it sitting for 3 days. We made sure the headlights were turned off (they are not automatic on this car) and kept all doors closed and interior lights off to prevent battery draw.
Still, the battery was completely dead when we were ready to leave, to the point where not even dash lights came on. We were stranded. Luckily, we found someone who could jump start the car since even 2 booster packs did not work. Access to the battery was difficult due to the way the air intake is running over top. After successful boosting the check engine light came on.
Once I had cell service again, I immediately notified the owner who told me not to worry about it. When I mentioned being stranded due to a dead battery, he offered no apology and told me about the headlights possibly having been left on (no auto switch). When I replied that this was not the case, there was only radio silence. If we hadn't found someone to help us we would have been stranded in the middle of the Rockies without cell service.
