⭐ 1 STAR — ABSOLUTELY TERRIBLE EXPERIENCE. I DO NOT RECOMMEND TURO TO ANYONE!
My first experience with Turo in Canada was an absolute nightmare. I have never experienced such frustration, wasted time, unexpected expenses, and disappointment with a car rental service. Based on my experience, I would strongly advise people to think twice before trusting this platform.
1. First booking — Porsche Macan cancelled at the last minute
I booked a Porsche Macan at the beginning of August for a trip from September 4 to October 4. I booked well in advance because I wanted to avoid last-minute problems and secure a reasonable price.
Imagine arriving at the airport, planning your entire trip around your reservation, only to contact the host and discover that the car supposedly had problems and was suddenly unavailable!
What kind of professional service is this? Why advertise a car and accept a booking if you cannot provide it?
I contacted Turo, and all they could offer was an apology and $600 in compensation. They tried to find me another car, but nothing comparable was available at the same price. I was forced to arrange an expensive rental directly from the airport at the last minute.
2. Second booking — another cancellation!
I had to rent the airport car from September 4 to September 16 because that was the earliest date another Turo car could become available. I thought my problems would finally be over, but I was wrong.
When I returned the airport rental on September 16, my next Turo host cancelled my booking again!
Can you imagine the stress of arranging your entire trip around confirmed reservations and repeatedly discovering that the promised car is unavailable? This was the second time I had experienced this problem.
3. Third booking — Tesla Model Y with misleading mileage claims
I then booked a Tesla Model Y, hoping that at least this booking would work out. After all the previous problems, I needed a reliable car with sufficient mileage allowance and a reasonable price.
Unfortunately, I had another terrible experience.
The host advertised the Tesla as offering approximately 340 kilometres on a single charge. In my actual experience, I was getting less than 200 kilometres, which was nowhere near what I had expected from the advertisement.
I also had a very low monthly mileage allowance of only 2,700 kilometres. For a one-month rental in Canada, this was extremely restrictive for my needs. The limited range and repeated charging stops made my travel frustrating, inconvenient, and far more difficult than expected.
If you advertise a Tesla with a particular driving range, customers deserve realistic and accurate information. A vehicle's actual range depends on several factors, including weather, speed, and driving conditions, but customers should not be left feeling that the advertised range bears little resemblance to their real experience.
Between the mileage restrictions, frequent charging, and inconvenience, this rental was absolutely not worth the money.
4. Turo customer service — apologies are not enough!
Every time I contacted Turo, I received apologies, but the practical help was inadequate. Finding a replacement car at a comparable price was a problem, and I was left dealing with expensive alternatives and the consequences of repeated cancellations.
What is the point of booking in advance if customers cannot rely on their reservations?
A car rental platform should provide dependable bookings, transparent mileage restrictions, accurate vehicle descriptions, and meaningful support when things go wrong. In my experience, Turo failed to deliver the reliability I expected.
5. The financial loss and stress were unacceptable
Because of these repeated problems, I ended up spending more than $3,000 in total on rental-related expenses and additional mileage costs, according to my experience. I also lost valuable time, faced unnecessary stress, and had to make compromises on price, vehicle choice, and driving range.
I booked in advance specifically to avoid these problems. Instead, everything became more expensive and complicated.
MY FINAL VERDICT: I DO NOT RECOMMEND TURO IN CANADA.
My experience involved three bookings, repeated cancellations, expensive last-minute alternatives, restrictive mileage allowances, disappointing real-world driving range, and customer support that did not adequately resolve my problems.
I am extremely disappointed with both the hosts involved in my bookings and the overall service I received from Turo.
For my future trips, I would rather compare rental cars through Kayak or Skyscanner and book directly with an established rental company, after confirming the terms and availability. No rental platform can guarantee a flawless experience, but I want a company that takes reservations seriously and provides dependable customer support.
Save yourself the stress: read the mileage limits carefully, verify the advertised driving range, and make sure you understand th
