smart fortwo 2014

The car was different, but it's the first time I've driven a smart for2, so I don't really have anything to compare it with. So, from lack of real knowledge about them, I'll say it was kind of like learning to drive a stick, on a skateboard. It had a certain "temperament", but ran the whole time, just a bit rough, especially going up hills. I found it was best to use cruise control, and let the car accelerate and such at its own pace. The saving grace for the money spent was the host! Megan is accommodating, kind, helpful, polite, considerate, friendly, and authentically gracious. If everyone were somewhere close to Megan in temperament and generosity, the world would be a much better place!

Top tips for renting a car in Sitka

Get set for a great time driving in Sitka by first brushing up on the local road rules and Alaska’s driving quirks. Here’s a quick rundown so you’re ready when it’s time to hit the roads — all 14 miles of them.

What are the road rules and driving conditions in Sitka?

Because Sitka is small and isolated from the rest of Alaska, it’s an easy place to drive. There’s not much to worry about on Sitka’s roads, and the state’s driving rules line up with the rest of the US. Sitka isn’t connected by road to hubs like car rental in Anchorage, so you reach it by ferry or flight rather than a highway.

While driving in Sitka, always drive on the right-hand side of the road, wear a seatbelt, obey road signage, and stick to the speed limits. These are capped at 15 miles per hour (mph) in alleys, 20 mph downtown, and 25 mph in residential areas and on major roads like Sawmill Creek Rd. Texting and driving is illegal in Alaska — you may only hold your phone if making a call — and many roads in the state ask you to keep your headlights on all day. Most Alaskan drivers do this by default, which is a good habit to adopt if you’re unsure.

Keep an eye out for wildlife, too. Although the area has a more suburban feel than other parts of the state, you may still meet the occasional deer or bear on the road, especially at night. By following speed limits, using your headlights, and staying alert, you should have no trouble if an animal crosses your path.

While Alaska is known for icy, snowy conditions, you won’t notice it as much in Sitka thanks to its location in the south of the state. The city sees around 45 inches of snow a year, and temperatures rarely drop far below 22°F, so winters stay mild. Take the same year-round care — practicing defensive driving and keeping up with weather updates. For extra peace of mind, filter by snow chains on Turo and find a car that suits your needs.

What is parking like in Sitka?

Parking in Sitka is a breeze. At major attractions, including parks and wildlife centers like Fortress of the Bear, you’ll find ample parking that’s often free. In the city center, there are street spots plus a small handful of lots if you need one. For an easy place to leave your car while you walk around downtown, try the free all-day lot at Harrigan Centennial Hall. At Sitka Rocky Gutierrez Airport, there are two lots — short-term (day use only) and long-term (up to 7 days) — both free when you follow the posted rules.

Are there toll roads in Sitka?

No, there are no toll roads in Sitka, so you can drive around town in your car rental without thinking about tolls at all.

Are there gas stations and EV chargers in Sitka?

When we say Sitka is remote, we mean it. As of 2025, there are only two gas stations in town: the Cascade Convenience Store at 1211 Sawmill Creek Rd, and the Petro Express Car Wash and Gas at 614 Katlian St. It’s hard to run low with only 14 miles of road to explore, but it’s still worth planning your fill-ups for convenience.

Electric vehicles (EVs) are still fairly new across Alaska, but Sitka has more than you might think — a little over 120 were registered here in 2022, favorable uptake for a town of just over 8,000. There’s one EV charging station in Sitka, at 204 Siginaka Way. If you’re only visiting for a short time, a gas-powered car may take the guesswork out of your trip.

Do I need to rent a car in Sitka?

Unlike many parts of the US, renting a car in Sitka isn’t a necessity. Downtown is easily walkable, and buses run from the cruise ship terminal if you want to reach the main sights. But if you’re relocating, staying longer-term, or traveling for work, a Sitka car rental really comes in handy. Your own car opens up the natural beauty of this Alaskan gem — including direct access to parks that’s harder to come by on someone else’s schedule.
