Sunshine Coast

In the summer months, Brisbanites flock to the Sunshine Coast to take advantage of the region’s beautiful beaches. Up and down the coast there are numerous beachside towns and cities, all of which are easily accessible by car. Add Noosa, Caloundra, Maroochydore, and the hinterland towns of Eumundi and Maleny to your road trip itinerary.

Toowoomba

If Brisbane Airport is merely a stopover on the way to the regional city of Toowoomba, you’ll be glad to know you can drive there in less than two hours. Once you arrive, don’t miss the many gardens, parks, and floral displays around the city (Toowoomba is, after all, known as the Garden City) as well as the great cafes and stellar street art.

Byron Bay

Home to counter-culture, health retreats, and epic surf breaks, Byron Bay is a big draw for those visiting Brisbane. Plus, it’s just two hours away by car. The food and drink scene here is buzzy and inventive, and being situated on Australia’s east coast, naturally the beaches are downright gorgeous. There are also lovely towns, villages, and national parks around Byron that are well worth visiting.

Brisbane is packed to the brim with things to eat, drink, see, do, and explore. Here are some good places to start.

Eat Street

Brisbane has a thriving and ever-evolving food scene, which converges at Eat Street. Situated right on the Brisbane River in a collection of shipping containers, this night market brings together restaurants, bars, and shops, paired with a revolving roster of live entertainment. Plus, the market is just 15 minutes away from Brisbane Airport and offers free parking.

Mount Coot-Tha

Drive west of the Brisbane CBD and you’ll hit Mount Coot-Tha, the city’s iconic mountain backdrop. If you’re up for a hike, there are several excellent trails criss-crossing up and around the mountain. You also have the option to go at a slower pace and wander around the 1,600 odd hectares of spectacular forest that surround it.

QAGOMA

Get your arts and culture fix at QAGOMA, aka the Queensland Art Gallery and Gallery of Modern Art. In one building you can check out an impressive collection of artworks by local and international artists (including a number of Indigenous works), and in the other you’ll find lots of interesting contemporary pieces as well as regular screenings of obscure and foreign films.

We encourage you to request to add authorised drivers before your trip starts, though guests in the US, Canada, and Australia can request to add a driver while a trip is in progress with no extra charges.

To speed up the process, have your additional driver create a Turo account and get approved to drive before you request to add them. You can request to add drivers via the “Trips” tab in the Turo app without additional driver charges or extra costs.

Skip the rental car counter at Brisbane Airport and have your car delivered to you at the airport. If you land at the airport and have extra time before your scheduled check-in time, take a taxi, Uber, Lyft, or shuttle service to the address of your hotel or vacation rental, and have your car delivered to you to save time and hassle.

Can I pick my car up near Brisbane Airport?

Turo hosts have the option to offer airport pickup for their cars, and they can set their own delivery fee or offer free delivery. Some hosts may offer pickup and returns at Brisbane Airport, as well as other travel hubs in the city center like train stations, hotels, or custom pickup locations.

What’s the best way to get from Brisbane Airport to Brisbane City?

If you’d prefer to hit the road, Brisbane Airport is only 17 kilometres from Brisbane City. It’s an easy drive between the two; the road is flat and there’s rarely much traffic until you hit the CBD.

Brisbane Airport’s multiple transport options will also take you into the city and even beyond. The Airtrain is a good choice, with a journey to Brisbane City taking around 20 minutes. From there, you can connect to public transport including buses and trains, which travel to numerous Brisbane locations. The Airtrain also goes to the Gold Coast.

Alternatively, you can book a private shuttle bus for door-to-door service to your accommodation.

Can you drive from Brisbane to Fraser Island or Bribie Island?

Queensland is a big state, and often there are several hours between cities, towns, and other destinations. Fraser Island sits quite far north of Brisbane, just off the coastal city of Hervey Bay. By car, the journey from Brisbane to Fraser Island is about 350 kilometres. You can take your car over to Fraser Island, but it has to be a 4WD (this is the world’s largest sand island, after all) and you’ll need to book a spot on the Fraser Island Barge.

Luckily, Bribie Island is in a much more convenient location. It lies in Moreton Bay alongside North Stradbroke Island and Moreton Island, and is only 81 kilometres out of Brisbane City. It’s also connected to the mainland by bridge, making it very easy to venture there by car.
