We had a wonderful day exploring the highlands because we were able to rent a car from Shahzad! He was wonderful to communicate with. We had some difficulty working the hybrid style, as it is different than what we were used to, and he called within minutes to help us. I would absolutely rent from him again!

The host was friendly, communicative, and quick to respond throughout the rental, making everything hassle-free. Overall, the car was comfortable, reliable, and good to drive. We’d definitely recommend it and would happily rent it again!

Pickup near or at Airports
Renting a car in Edinburgh allows you to explore with ease. Understanding local driving conditions, parking rules, and fuel options can make your trip smoother, especially for Canadian visitors who may notice differences in road etiquette and signage. Here are a few driving tips to keep in mind.
In Edinburgh, driving is on the left side of the road, unlike in Canada, where drivers use the right. Speed limit signs are in miles per hour (mph), so Canadian drivers used to kilometres per hour must stay alert. Narrow streets, especially in the Old Town, can be challenging, with tight turns and cobbled surfaces. Pedestrian crossings are strictly enforced, and red light cameras are widespread. Winter conditions can be milder than in Canada, but rain and occasional ice require caution. Overall, staying aware of local signage and taking care on city streets ensures a safe driving experience.
Parking in Edinburgh is limited due to the large number of visitors to the city. However, you’ll have access to street parking in the city centre, often metered with time limits. Some areas, especially near the Royal Mile or New Town, have resident-only permits. Public garages and multi-storey car parks are available but can be expensive compared to Canadian rates. Overnight street parking is often restricted, and double yellow lines indicate no stopping, similar to red zones in Canada.
Edinburgh, unlike some Canadian provinces where toll highways are common, has no toll roads. Most roads in and around the city are free to use, including major routes to coastal areas and nearby towns. However, if you’re driving farther south into England, check your route in advance, as some bridges and motorways there may charge tolls. Planning ahead can help you avoid unexpected fees during longer road trips.
Gas stations are widely available throughout Edinburgh, but fuel is sold per litre, unlike in Canada, and prices may fluctuate more frequently. Most stations are self-service, and prepayment is often required inside before fuelling. For electric vehicles, Edinburgh has a growing network of EV chargers, especially near public car parks, shopping areas and Edinburgh Airport. There are fewer chargers in rural areas and the Scottish Highlands, so planning charging stops in advance is recommended. This helps ensure a smooth trip if you’re exploring scenic routes outside the city.
Whether you need a rental car in Edinburgh depends on your itinerary. For exploring the city centre, walking, biking, and public transport are often sufficient. However, you need a car rental for day trips to the Scottish Highlands, Loch Ness or the surrounding countryside. Renting provides flexibility for spontaneous stops, scenic drives and exploring areas less accessible by bus or train. Families, groups or visitors carrying luggage may find a car rental more convenient than relying on taxis or public transit. Ultimately, a rental car is ideal for travellers looking to combine city sightseeing with scenic excursions beyond Edinburgh.
