"Mixed experience: Serious safety issue, but host took responsibility in the end."
"We had a stressful situation during our trip to Algonquin Park. Unfortunately, the car turned out to have tires in poor condition (which we found out at a tire service shop in Huntsville). While the front tires were fine, the rear ones were badly worn down, and one had an existing patch. This tire went flat inside the park, leaving us stranded. My husband had to install the donut spare, and we spent hours on a Friday night finding an open tire shop. The mechanic confirmed both rear tires were unsafe to drive on and required replacement, forcing us to return the car early.
Despite everything happening on Friday evening, the host refused to officially end the rental that night and only accepted the car on Saturday morning, which resulted in an extra day of rental charges.
It took a dispute via Turo support (Case #59188827) to resolve the maintenance neglect claim, which was very stressful. However, once support sided with us, the host—who has good reviews otherwise—admitted his mistake regarding the tire upkeep. We appreciate that he ultimately took responsibility. While this was a dangerous oversight and the return process added frustration, we hope the host has now addressed his vehicle maintenance.
Our main takeaway from this experience is that the Turo app and system are flawed when things go wrong. Support doesn't really look into the details, leaving you completely dependent on the host's actions—meaning we couldn't even return a car that broke down through no fault of our own on the same day. It seems traditional rental car companies are a better choice. For future guests: the car itself is nice, but please do a thorough tire check before leaving."
