We traveled to Canada from August 8 to August 15, and I consider myself a very fair person who believes in giving credit where it is due. Because of that, I'd like to break this review into two sections: the pros and the cons.
Pros
The booking rate was very competitive and offered good value. The host communicated in a timely manner throughout the process, which I appreciated. The vehicle was parked in a convenient location, and we only had to ask two people for directions to find it. For visitors unfamiliar with Toronto Pearson Airport, that is actually a fairly smooth experience.
The vehicle was a good size for my family, and we were able to comfortably fit our children and all of our luggage. The navigation system connected well with my phone, although it was a good thing I had brought my own charging cable. Returning the vehicle was also straightforward. I messaged the host, followed the provided instructions, and had no issues with the drop-off process.
Cons
When we first started the vehicle, it immediately sounded as though it needed servicing. Even my husband commented that it sounded like the belt might be wearing out. However, after a long day of travel, we were exhausted and did not want to deal with the inconvenience of changing vehicles.
Our first frustration occurred when leaving the airport parking lot. The parking fee was $30, yet Turo only reimbursed us $18. Since parking fees are determined by how long a vehicle remains in the lot, we were disappointed that the vehicle appeared to have been parked there much earlier than our scheduled arrival time, resulting in an additional cost to us.
The next day, once we were able to inspect the vehicle in daylight, several cosmetic issues became apparent. There were extensive scratches on the backs of the front seats, as though they had been scraped repeatedly with a key or other sharp object.
We also continued to notice engine-related concerns throughout the trip. The vehicle often sounded as though it struggled to start, accompanied by loud bubbling noises. Because the vehicle continued to operate and we did not want the disruption of exchanging vehicles during our vacation, we chose not to pursue the matter while traveling.
Another concern was the fuel consumption. During the week, we spent an unexpectedly large amount on gas, to the point where it felt like we were approaching the cost of the rental itself. This reinforced our impression that the vehicle may need servicing.
Additionally, the air conditioning did not consistently stay cool. We found that the only way to restore colder air was to turn the system off for a period of time and then turn it back on.
Final Thoughts
I am not sharing these concerns to be unkind. Rather, I believe that when customers spend their hard-earned money, they should receive a product or service that meets a high standard. Unfortunately, several aspects of this rental fell short of that expectation, and not all of our needs were met.
My hope is that the host takes this feedback constructively and addresses the maintenance and condition issues so that future customers can enjoy an experience that meets or exceeds the standard that should be expected.
