Frequently asked questions

Who is BFL CANADA?

BFL CANADA is the insurance broker who distributes the insurance products underwritten by Aviva Insurance in Canada for the Turo hosts. BFL CANADA is one of the largest employee-owned and operated Risk Management and Insurance Brokerage in Canada. The firm has a team of over 1,500 professionals located in 27 offices across the country.

Why should I trust BFL CANADA to provide off-trip car insurance?

Turo Canada has partnered with BFL CANADA and Tint to offer off-trip insurance that was created exclusively for Turo hosts. BFL’s policies are underwritten by Aviva Insurance which specializes in automobile insurance and fleet coverage. Lastly, Tint was founded by two former Turo employees (and current Turo hosts!) who, along with Tint’s customer support representatives, understand car sharing inside and out.

Does this insurance meet provincial minimum requirements?

Yes! The automobile fleet insurance policy meets the minimum requirements for Ontario, Alberta, and Nova Scotia. BFL CANADA will provide you with a pink card that will act as proof of financial responsibility for vehicle registration purposes or if you are pulled over or involved in an accident.

Are any discounts available?

Yes! You could be eligible for a 40% annual discount from Aviva Insurance if your vehicle has an approved Telematics Device installed to track monthly off Turo platform mileage. Review the GPS & Telematics Options for Off-trip Insurance Coverage.

How much does the off-trip car insurance cost?

Coverage with an approved telematics device starts at $88.00per month per vehicle for $2,000,000 Third Party Liability and All Perils / Physical Damage coverage. The final price depends on the plans you choose. All pricing will be provided before you purchase the policy.

Who’s allowed to drive my vehicles when they’re not booked on Turo?

Turo hosts, your co-hosts, employees and any person authorized by the Host with a valid license are covered. Owners/Employees must be over 25 years old and have a valid G license and no more than 2 minor convictions

When will my first payment be withdrawn?

BFL CANADA will charge for the first month of coverage when you purchase fleet insurance. A BFL CANADA broker will contact you post-quote to complete payment

Is this off-trip insurance for business use only?

This off-trip insurance is designed for business use when the vehicle is not in an active rental phase on the Turo platform. For example, the chaser vehicle will be covered when driving to drop-off your rented vehicle for a guest, or going to the car wash, gas station, mechanical service/ maintenance and occasional personal use.

What are the common exclusions on this policy?

Standard Provincial statutory automobile insurance policy exclusions will apply:
General Exclusions:

  • ∙ The automobile is used to carry explosives or radioactive materials,
  • ∙ The automobile is used as a taxicab, bus, a sight seeing conveyance or to carry paying passengers
  • ∙ If the automobile is rented or leased to others by you outside of the Turo Platform with the exception of Liability, this policy does not carry loss, damage or death caused by war activities. See BFL CANADA's conduct standards here.

Can I use this insurance to cover my vehicles used on other platforms or for private rental use?

No, this insurance only applies to vehicles listed on the Turo platform and does not cover use on other platforms or for private vehicle rentals. You are required to disclose if you use the vehicle for more than one operation and or platforms.

Does off-trip insurance cover vehicles registered under a business/entity name?

Yes! This program is a commercial automobile fleet policy, designed with businesses in mind. BFL CANADA allows hosts to sign up for coverage using a business or entity name. If you sign up with a business name, your Certificate of Insurance and ID cards will be issued to the business entity. Please note that copies of vehicle ownership are required upon binding.

Yes, Tint requires you to have a minimum of five or more vehicles listed on Turo to be eligible for this offering.

I co-host a few vehicles, can I include them under my policy?

No, the owner of the vehicle must apply for the policy on their own. The co-host vehicle owner is required to purchase and insure their own vehicles through their own automobile insurance policy.

Will I need a GPS Anti-Theft tracker or other device?

Yes, if your vehicle is identified as a High Theft Vehicle. Aviva Insurance requires an approved anti-theft device installed to avoid a premium surcharge. The good news is that If you install an Aviva-approved theft recovery device in your vehicle within 60 days of starting your new automobile policy, the High Theft Vehicle Surcharge will be waived. If the device is installed more than 60 days after your policy begins, the surcharge will be refunded on a pro-rata basis from the installation date.

If I install a GPS tracker, do I need to tell my guest about it?

We recommend you notify your guest in advance if you have a tracking device in your vehicle. Please review Turo’s Vehicle Tracking Policy for more information.

When does my coverage begin?

Your coverage from Aviva Insurance can begin the moment you complete your purchase. After you’ve completed your transaction, your policy documentation will be emailed to you.

How many kilometers per month can I drive with this insurance?

If you have a telematics device installed, for each car on your policy, you’ll have 300 km per month for off-platform use included in your quoted price, and these kilometers can be shared across your covered cars. For example, if you purchase a policy with five cars, you’ll have 1,500 km per month included in your quoted price. Use 1,500 kms on one car or spread them across all five. Any additional kilometers will be subject to a surcharge. Please note, we only track kilometers if you opt for the telematics plan.
