Our first Turo experience was extremely disappointing and, most importantly, concerning from a safety standpoint. During the second day and third drive of the trip, the vehicle experienced a major mechanical failure when the CV axle / joint completely separated while we were driving under normal conditions. We had to pull over immediately and the vehicle became undriveable.
This was a serious safety issue and could have been far more dangerous had it occurred at highway speed.
The host did come to the location and remained with the vehicle while waiting for the tow truck, which we appreciated. However, the condition of the vehicle and the severity of the mechanical failure left us very concerned. Safety should be the most basic expectation when renting a vehicle.
I would strongly encourage future renters to carefully inspect the vehicle and ask questions about any recent mechanical work before driving.
For your reference, the vehicle inspector came up with an inconclusive result - it is not entirely from a mechanical failure. There are transfers at the bottom of the underside. The CV axle was brand new from Lordco installed by a RSE certified mechanic. Every vehicle is inspected and test drove for a long period of time before listing to Turo. Our reputation is important to us.
