Lexus steps their game up

Lexus launched the GX back in 2003 to serve as a luxurious mid-size SUV that offered more reliability and durability than competitors from the likes of BMW and Mercedes. It’s been successful as the younger sibling of Lexus’ LX, or a pricer alternative to the Toyota 4Runner, but never really drew much attention. However, a new generation has arrived for 2024, and it brings a whole new design that feels much more special. So let’s have a look at Han’s 2024 Lexus GX, our August car of the month.

The GX’s platform and design are mostly shared with the new Toyota Land Cruiser — if you look at them side-by-side, the shape is nearly identical. And that’s very purposeful. The GX looks extremely sharp and upscale, but its aggressively boxy body shouts chiefly about its toughness. This redesign has brought a heavy focus on creating an image of ruggedness and any-terrain capability, which, by the way, is definitely earned.

This is the only powertrain available for now: a twin-turbo 3.4L V6 putting out 350 hp — gone is the outgoing (but less powerful) V8. This new engine is only a couple MPGs more efficient, but a hybrid version is suspected to arrive in the coming years. The V6 offers enough grunt to get you around, but this is a heavy body-on-frame SUV and generally drives like one.

The interior is largely what you’d expect to find in a Lexus. High quality, sensibly laid out, covered in leather, and with a bundle of modern technology. The most fun feature is the center console’s cool box, which is not a refrigerator, but it will keep your drinks cool. The Lexus GX’s cabin is certainly a nice place to be, but the exterior is surely the highlight of the design.

But Han’s GX is in the Overtrail trim, so there are some items inside you won’t find with other Lexus models. There are switches for low range gearing, locking center and rear differentials, crawl control, and Lexus’ multi-terrain select system, which adapts suspension, steering, and acceleration to maximize traction on different surfaces. The Overtrail also gets 33-inch all-terrain tires, adaptive suspension, and a metal skid plate.

All of this amounts to an impressively sophisticated off-road system with some really serious equipment, making the GX right at home on dirt roads and overlanding trails just about anywhere (but keep in mind, off-roading is prohibited with cars booked on Turo). As with any truck or SUV model, many owners will never leave the pavement, but those who do will be in excellent hands.

Overall, the 2024 Lexus GX delivers on many levels. Its exciting look and legitimate trail capabilities make it an enticing option for those who might otherwise look at a Land Rover, Jeep, or Rivian, and you can try Han’s GX right here on Turo in Southern California.
