Ford’s classic V8 roars into summer
At a time when the Mustang name is emblazoned on an electric SUV, it’s refreshing to see a high-powered V8 rascal top off the traditional Mustang coupe lineup. The Dark Horse trim delivers crazy intense performance and killer looks to one of the globe’s most beloved and recognized nameplates in automotive history. Muscle car summer is heating up, so let’s dive in to Ali’s premier racehorse and see what makes it the perfect companion for any summer adventure.
With a name as aggressive and ominous as Dark Horse, Ford’s top pony is poised for peak performance and noir aesthetics. It features a 5.0L V8 Coyote engine, the most powerful naturally aspirated engine of any Mustang. This beast puts out 500 hp at 418 lb-ft of torque and can reach 60 mph in 3.7 seconds after launch. This heart-pumping acceleration is achieved thanks to a 10-speed automatic transmission and sticky 19-inch Pirelli P Zero tires. When it’s time to stop the party, Brembo brakes bring the car to a halt from 70 mph in just 142 feet, ten feet shorter than the Challenger Hellcat.
While these ultra-high performance stats are sure to make the highlights of any summer road trip, the Dark Horse is just the latest of a tenured legacy of wild Mustangs of the past. Names like Boss, Shelby, Bullitt, and Mach all belong to the Mustang family throughout its six decades of production. Though the Dark Horse is mostly a refreshed, quicker version of the Mustang Mach 1 that was introduced in 2021, it represents the top of the line for the new seventh generation Mustang. Ford has hinted at a track-destined Shelby performance variant of the seventh Mustang generation. But, even if this Shelby features an electrified powertrain, the Dark Horse is an investment into the longevity of Ford’s classic V8 bloodline, now with a more darkened, shadowy presence than ever before.
Ali’s blacked-out coupe looks just as serious as its performance under the hood. When unlocking, the headlights flash a unique animation sequence with pulsing LEDs resembling a staredown with a snarling stallion. The iridescent, dark metallic paint glimmers shades of navy and peach when the light hits just right. An extended front lip, arched rear wing, and prominent hood vents bring sports car flair and advanced aerodynamics.
Once you open its doors, a Mustang puddle lamp paves the way to its five passenger cabin. Heading inside the car, deep indigo Recaro bucket seats with vibrant blue stitching welcome you inside the control center. The driving controls and customizable digital dashboard are angled towards the driver, maximizing the focus on the road ahead. The Dark Horse also presents a leather-wrapped shift knob, heated steering wheel, and adjustable ambient lighting to set the mood. Twelve Bang & Olufsen speakers create an enveloping soundstage for your summer playlist, boosted by a subwoofer in the trunk.
Yet what really sets the Dark Horse apart from the herd is what happens once the engine growls to life. Although the gauge cluster goes up to 9,000 rpm, you can rev to 7,250 rpm with active performance exhaust ensuring the drive is at full volume. Driving around twisted corners, the Torsen limited slip differential keeps the Mustang incredibly responsive and agile. The impact of rocks or divots in the road is minimized by a magnetic damping suspension and active pothole mitigation system that ensure a smooth ride on any asphalt road. If you want to personalize your drive even further, there’s plenty of controls to adjust in Ford’s Sync 4.0 infotainment system. Plus, if you want to hear the menacing Coyote engine in all its glory, you can remotely turn on the car and rev its engine with a press of the key fob. Just make sure not to wake sleeping neighbors nearby.
The Mustang Dark Horse embodies the essence of summertime fun with its unrestrained performance and strikingly sinister appearance. It offers a modern interpretation of living wild and free in an American muscle car.
