The G-Wagon plugs into its enduring legacy

Few cars have amassed enough global adoration to earn a nickname that resonates as a status symbol. And yet the G-Wagon has networked and climbed the social ladder to transform from a street-legal military ute into an ultra-premium SUV asserting its dominance from the valet circle. Mercedes has taken this evolution one step further, offering an all-electric variant for the newest G-Wagon. The G580 EV is a natural metamorphosis of the icon, and Issa’s powder blue spectacle is the perfect example to celebrate the October car of the month.

The Mercedes-Benz G-Wagon is a stylish, utilitarian SUV at the pinnacle of imposing luxury behemoths. But that wasn’t always the case. The G-Class began humbly in 1979 as a civilian variant of the military vehicle used by armies worldwide. It was a no-frills offroader with a solid ladder-type frame and manual transmission. Ten years later, the next generation traded in its uniform for black tie attire: padded leather upholstery, wooden dashboard trims and thicker sound insulation. It heralded in an era of exclusivity and grandeur for a largely untapped industry segment.

In 2025, the Mercedes G580 with EQ Technology, er — G-Wagon EV, continues this legacy with a largely unchanged build and familiar driving experience now fueled by electric power. The G580 boasts 579 hp and gripping 859 lb-ft of torque that entertains for up to 239 miles. That’s sufficient range to take Issa’s wagon to a swanky Mount Hood ski resort, though short of competitors like the Hummer SUV’s 314 mile range. Its impressive power derives from four independently controlled electric motors — a unique powertrain that unlocks show-stopping dance moves.

One of these is the G-TURN. At the press of a button and a strong grip of the steering wheel, the car spins 360° in place, up to two rotations. While intended for narrow trails, it’ll likely be handy in a Whole Foods parking lot (although this maneuver will chew through tires so please refrain doing it with your host’s car). Now, every dancer needs a soundtrack, and the G-ROAR delivers: a series of amplified sounds to accompany key events. Punching the accelerator unleashes a growl similar to the gas-powered AMG sibling. And when the G is locked and you approach with the key, it buzzes an “aura” best described as a spaceship hovering above. Aura with sweet dance moves — it’s the whole package.

While the spaceship hums its symphonic note, you can admire the G-Wagon’s exterior that is remarkably similar to that 1989 model. It’s still as boxy as a package at your doorstep, with circular headlights, rectangular taillights, and a massive three-pointed star for a nose. Issa’s electric G also looks nearly identical to the gas-powered G, but with a beefier hood and rear wheel compartment that houses its charging cables. Pronounced door hinges, broad fenders, and that classic door close sound — everything else remains the same, welcoming electric drivers into the Mercedes family without taking away from the storied G-Wagon.

Inside this 6’6’’ SUV is a cabin that’s both modern and practical. This flagship Mercedes makes its statement with massaging, heated, and ventilated front seats, a massive dual-screen infotainment dashboard, and plenty of chrome throughout. The climate, ambient lighting, and Burmester stereo system with Dolby Atmos 3D sound can all be controlled by saying “Hey Mercedes,” with just enough physical buttons for quick adjustments. The G-Wagon also features the latest driver assistance technology, most notably a digitally enhanced surround camera that shows exactly where that pesky curb is when parallel parking.

The G580 EV is less a reinvention than a reassurance — proof that even in an electric age, the G-Wagon hasn’t lost its edge. It’s still a rolling contradiction: a status symbol born from a battlefield, a trail machine most at home in a luxury parking lot. Yet that’s precisely its charm. Issa’s G-Class may have a new electric powertrain, but it carries the same weighty presence and unmistakable prowess wherever it goes.
