A success in smiles-per-mile

The general consensus is the Volkswagen ID. Buzz has largely delivered on the hype since coming to North American shores last year. The all-electric minivan has brought a hit design and real utility to a market with few-to-no rivals in the EV space. There are more options for EVs every year, but because the ID. Buzz really should compete with traditional minivans like the Honda Odyssey and Toyota Sienna, its playful looks and electric powertrain help it stand out in a big way. Let’s have a look at Wade’s 2025 Volkswagen ID. Buzz, our November car of the month.

Right off the bat, the ID. Buzz’s biggest selling point is the design. Its sleek, modern take on the friendly VW buses of old feels like it’s hitting a satisfying sweet spot. The two-tone paint and hubcap-evoking wheels make its inspiration instantly recognizable. And since it’s electric and has no engine up front, the ID. Buzz gets to have very little body hanging past the front wheels, which further helps it emulate the classic Microbuses everyone knows and loves. In short, Volkswagen hit this design out of the park.

The other key component is the voluminous, airy cabin. It uses a similar blend of retro and modern, and is genuinely super practical. The ID. Buzz’s interior is highly configurable, and in Wade’s example, boasts an immense number of cubbies, pockets, and shelves for the storing of items — a non-negotiable in the minivan world.

The seats can fold flat or be removed, as they should be able to do in a proper minivan. There’s a big screen on the dashboard, ample cupholders, and notably, many charging ports. Actually, there are up to eight USB-C ports inside the ID. Buzz, which is a nice touch of minivan practicality meeting the model’s electric nature. “Buzz” is in the name, after all.

But there’s more than straight German utility inside. This Volkswagen has customizable ambient lighting, massaging front seats, and a huge moonroof that adds to the capacious feeling. And there are play and pause icons embossed on the “gas” and brake pedals. Very cool.

For a vehicle of this size, it’s reasonably quick — 5.5 seconds to 60 mph was a sports car acceleration figure not that long ago. Wade’s van here is an all-wheel drive version, which means it has an EPA-estimated 231-mile range on one charge. 231 miles isn’t particularly impressive in the EV world, but it should get the job done for everything but long road trips.

So the ID. Buzz provides most of the practicality you’d look for in a minivan and has some fun party tricks. Sales haven’t been exactly stellar, likely related to its price tag (starting around $60 grand) and less-than-outstanding battery range. But it looks like nothing else on the road and definitely succeeds in putting a smile on your face. And that’s got to be worth a lot.
