Choose your own adventure

BMW’s latest SUV doesn’t ask for attention, it commands it. The all-new XM looks and drives like nothing you’ve ever experienced. With gold trimmings and the world’s first twin-turbo V8 plug-in hybrid setup, this sports activity vehicle pushes the boundaries of convention. The XM foreshadows an electrified lineup for BMW’s M performance arm and is one of the most powerful BMWs ever produced. Let’s take a deeper look at Patrick’s 2023 BMW XM, our June car of the month.

As the newest member of the BMW M community, the XM is in a category of its own: as capable as the M3 sedan with the length of the large X7 SUV. But for the first time, the XM takes the traditional 4.4L V8 powertrain seen across the M fleet and pairs it with a 25.7 kWh battery for a combined 644 hp and 590 lb-ft torque. This keeps the XM ultra-potent, reaching 60 mph in just over four seconds. The unique dual-powertrain can seamlessly transition between full-gas or full-electric driving with a handy 30 miles of electric-only range. To recharge, the plug-in battery can fill in just over three hours and is capable of DC fast charging or standard Level 2 charging at home or on the go.

What really sets the XM apart is its unconventional design. Its edgy detailing looks straight out of Rocket League’s playbook as the final, production-ready styling has the rare honor of looking remarkably similar to the concept version that debuted at Art Basel in 2021. Matte gold trimming wraps around every angle of the vehicle, including the LED-illuminated kidney grille and BMW’s first vertical quad-tip exhaust. Patrick’s Dravit Grey XM also sports 23-inch geometric rims in a two-tone black finish. With a futuristic design unlike any other Bimmer on the road, the XM strives for flashy, not classy.

Heading inside the cabin, Patrick’s XM is fully covered in red Merino leather with lumbar support pillows, ambient lighting, and a vintage suede headliner. You’ll first notice BMW’s massive curved display that houses the brand’s latest infotainment system featuring controls for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, customizable driving modes, massage seats, and a heads-up display. BMW made every effort to keep the XM feeling as innovative and special as possible, with illuminated, stainless steel tweeters with 3D acoustics from Bowers & Wilkins and a three-dimensional prism roof structure. Also, the SUV feels extra roomy as it shares a wheelbase with the three-row X7 but only has seating for five passengers, keeping it spacious for both a road trip or a Costco haul.

Pressing on the accelerator is a totally different experience when the XM is in “Hybrid,” “Electric,” or “eControl” modes. Near-instantaneous electric torque will propel the SUV from a standstill at a staggeringly quick, yet controlled pace. And the Hybrid and gas-powered modes provide a familiar, responsive ride that is smooth thanks to a coil-spring suspension. As part of the M family, the XM also benefits from intelligent all-wheel drive, adaptive dampers, active anti-roll bars, and BMW’s most advanced driving assistance technology. Even cooler, the XM offers the Parking Assistance Plus package that actively searches for a suitable parking space and, with your control of the speed, will autonomously park the car.

BMW is undergoing a renaissance of design alongside an electrification of its fleet, with massive grilles, bold body lines, and fully-electric variants of the 4 Series, 5 Series, and 7 Series. The XM pushes even harder to stand out, looking for a perfect balance of performance, luxury, and trendiness. With 644 hp of gas or electric power at your fingertips, you can choose your own adventure and truly have it all without compromise.
