How and where to charge the Rivian?
The Rivian's charging receptacle is located on the front driver side of the vehicle just forward of the front tire. Just run you rfinger across the three ridges and the cover will open or you can open it from inside the vecle on the screen's short cut tab. The Rivian can be charged at any CCS DC fast charger (i.e. EVGO, ChargePoint, Blink, Electrify America) and soon (early spring) many Tesla Superchargers.

Truck was awesome, location (Dulles Airport garage) convenient and host was communicative and accommodating. We needed a vehicle to take our family of five from an out of town arrival (and as many suitcases) to our kid’s tidewater University in VA some hours away, and this EV fit the bill perfectly. Target run for dorm supplies, other various things and ample room inside and storage to spare. Charging around the state was mostly ample, and actually worked 100% when we weren’t charging at home. Would rent from CC again and need to buy one of these one day.
Thank you so much for the excellent review. It was a pleasure hosting you!

We were really excited about renting a Rivian to try it as a possible alternative to owning a Tesla. However, charging it in the DC/Virginia area was a huge inconvenience without having the adapter to be able to plug into the Tesla charging network.
There were very few non-Tesla high speed charging stations along the way so we had to drive out of the way to charge it, and even the supposedly high speed (3 lightening bolts) charging stations were sooo slow we had to just wait for an hour or two which affected our plans.
If I had known it would be such an issue, I would have purchased the adapter myself ahead of time (approx $200 on Amazon, we started looking after our first charging stop but it would have taken a few days to arrive) since it would have saved us hours on the road.
**I would highly suggest this vehicle owner purchase and provide an adapter for future rental users.
Also, know that if you put the key back in the pouch in the center console at the end of your trip (where it's originally left for you), it will lock you out of the vehicle if you close the door when you're unloading the vehicle and he may not reopen the doors for you remotely to get the rest of your stuff out or put the parking ticket back into the vehicle. This was super frustrating when we were trying to figure it out with low cell service in the parking lot and trying to catch a flight back home, and walking all the way to the edge of the parking lot to get messages out and having him respond that we should just leave the parking ticket on the outside of the vehicle. My husband had to google what happened to figure out that the key holder is so the vehicle doesn't detect the key and thinks you've walk3ed away. Makes sense now that we know that; we'd never put the key in there again before fully unloading the car and making sure we put the parking ticket inside instead of hubby's pocket like he sometimes does automatically. Just a little needless stress at the end of the trip when we were politely cleaning out the vehicle from empty water bottles, etc. and sweating in 90 degree humid weather in the airport parking lot.
As the guest mentioned, it was the lack of cell phone service/signal (no network communication) that caused the vehicle to lock automatically (security precaution). It baffles me (as an owner of four teslas myself) why people decide to rent a non-Tesla but then expect a Tesla supercharger experience….it’s a work in progress. Tesla just began opening up their network up to other manufacturers. Adapters aren’t readily available as was explained to the guest prior to the rental period.
