Our Labor Day trip was nearly ruined by this rental experience. We started communication weeks in advance because we needed this truck to tow a rented RV, 200 miles away, on the same day. This trip was planned for a week with six people, and the truck was essential to making it happen.

Upon picking up the vehicle, I quickly noticed a serious issue—the steering wheel pulled sharply to the right. I immediately contacted the host, who, instead of addressing the problem in person, casually mentioned that he had forgotten to check the condition of the truck (major red flag). Despite this, we had no choice but to continue with the rental, as our entire trip depended on it. The host responded“Do whatever helps.”

So, we started doing the legwork that the host should have handled. At the alignment shop, the technician discovered multiple alarming issues, including bubbles and visible threads on the tires. Upon learning this was a rental vehicle, the technician warned us that the situation was so dangerous, it was practically a ticking time bomb. He even suggested legal action against the owner. After informing the host of the severity of the situation, he told us okay to find a tire shop.

Eventually, we found a shop that had the right tires in stock, but when we called the host again, he suddenly refused to pay for the replacements and asked us to cancel the trip instead! After an entire day spent trying to fix the truck, the host expected us to scrap our entire week-long travel plan.

Left with no other options, we paid for the new tires ourselves. The technician again reiterated how unsafe the previous tires were, and pointed out those wear were not new, stating that anyone recently driving on them could get killed.

The wasted day and unexpected expenses threw our entire schedule off balance.

Upon returning the truck, we requested reimbursement from the host, only to be met with accusations that we had ‘modified’ his vehicle. When we tried to swap back the faulty tires at the shop, they refused, explaining that re-installing such dangerous tires could lead to legal repercussions for them.

In the end, we returned the truck with two brand-new tires, out of pocket, and are now waiting for a fair resolution from Turo.
