First time I have ever given anyone less than 5 stars but this one earned it. This trip started off great. Let me preface everything by saying I have always had a great experience with Turo and this host was fine until it came time to step up and do the right thing regarding the safety of her vehicle for my family. I have been renting for years in all categories from economy to exotic. Plus I am a host at home. This was the trip from hell that people talk about on the Turo message boards. Please know this wasn’t a weekend trip, I was renting the vehicle for a month. I’m not going to trash Alexandra because it is what it is and I believe she is a nice person. Responsible host with a safe and reliable vehicle? In my opinion she is not. As a host myself I would never let anything like this happen to a guest. With that, it would never happen because I properly maintain my vehicles and what something happens, I fix it or take care of it immediately. Instead I dealt with a ton of excuses about her losing money because she had to extend her lease on the vehicle in order to extend my trip which cost her extra. That’s running a business. Welcome to running a business. From day 1, I was noticing a ton of brake noise as well as a dying battery so I let her host know. She instructed me to take it to her repair shop that was 11 miles away. Mind you this was the repair shop where she had previous work done to the brakes of this vehicle. Not so bad, just a super inconvenience. So I drag my family over there and we drop off the vehicle. The rear brakes are totally metal on metal. This is a problem. So I message her about what she wants to do. She starts immediacy complaining about the expense, that the shop is trying to rip her off and any other excuse except for the right way which would have been to just pay and let me & my family move on. That she didn’t. In the state of California, apparently it’s not legal for the repair shop to let you leave once they know your brakes are at failure so now I am dealing with this. Her response, just leave the vehicle and find something else on Turo. Very responsible thing to say to a guest. That wasn’t an option for me as my family was sitting waiting including a little baby. Thinking, it’s only $300, let me just have it done so I can get out of here. Yea that’s right, all of this over a $300 maintenance item on a leased vehicle. All of the hours, the time, the inconvenience, the hassle, the time away from my family, the time texting with Turo and honestly getting no where. This isn’t just a fault of the host, this is a ball drop by Turo. So have the brakes done and go on my way. I tell her about needing the reimbursement and she immediately starts complaining again how much she is at a loss on this trip, how she had to extend her lease to accommodate me and so on. None of that is my issue, if you are truly running a business, you know that there are going to be some transactions when you don’t make the profit you thought you would but you take care of the customer to keep your commitment to safety and reliability & a great experience. We were in and out of town every day so I honestly didn’t have time to go hunting for another vehicle and transfer car seats and all of our stuff. Regardless of the 14 hours I spent dealing with this between the repair shop, on with Turo and texting with the host, my family were the ones who suffered. Plus my time away from them. And honestly, it’s the first time I have seen Turo fail in stepping up to protect a guest from an irresponsible host and unsafe vehicle. As if that wasn’t enough, the tags expired during the trip so we were dead in the water and inevitably had to return the vehicle early which was a nightmare in itself sitting in front of the hosts host waiting for her to approve the early return so I could get another vehicle. 4 hours I sat there on the phone with Turo the whole time and yet again, neither one of them stepped in to accommodate me. No reprimanding from Turo to this clearly irresponsible host. No, sorry sir, let us have a vehicle delivered to you and we will charge the host back. Nothing, just my time wasted again. And then on top of it all, I wouldn’t leave the vehicle without knowing that it could be locked and safe. After all, even though I was dealing with someone with no integrity to their word, I still have mine. All comparable vehicles are much more expensive due to the fact I got a month discount. So what does Turo do 5 hrs later, they give me $$315 toward the difference. Nice however barely pays for the time and certainly not the delivery. So there I am at 9pm at night searching fir a vehicle and trekking around Los Angeles to find it. Sad and honestly unneeded. I don’t necessarily care about my time, this situation was what it was. I care about the time I lost with my family that easily could have been taken care of ahead of time. Don’t get me wrong, from all of my experiences with Turo, this one was not their finest day. However, the individuals I worked with at Turo were great and did their best within their guidelines to help. This all could have been avoided if Alexandra would have done the right thing from the beginning, had the vehicle properly maintained and dealt with a safety issue promptly in the most serving manner to the guest. And most of all, honored her commitment to Turo, the guest and herself and provided us with a safe, reliable vehicle abs when problems come up, as they do with mechanical items, honor the commitment to fix your vehicle to insure its compliant. Moral to the story. When a host says just leave the vehicle as they are unwilling to fix it because they aren’t committed to safety, just do it. When you are in that situation, just get Turo involved immediately and be prepared to spend considerable time waiting. If Turo says the remedy is to tow the vehicle and leave you and your family sitting somewhere waiting to find another ride, just do it, that choice could have saved me so much time and headache. Just to be rid of this problem and moved on probably would have been best. I was trying to do the right thing and honor my commitment to keep the vehicle safe while in my possession. That turned out to backfire on me. I believe this is an isolate incident gauging by my experience with Turo and looking at the hosts feedback. Nothing is ever perfect. However things could have been handled much better in this situation. I hope we all can learn from this and level up so another family doesn’t have to suffer through what we did.

Alexandra's response

Thank you for your feedback. I am glad we were able to find you another vehicle. I offered you a swap right away but you stated you will want to stay in the car. I am sorry for the inconvenience caused. Definitely customer service is our highest priority
