FAQs

  • Do I need to return the car with a certain charge?

Yes! The expectation is to bring the car back with at least 80% charged without paying any fees. There is a supercharger 10 minutes away from the address for the car.

  • What percentage should I charge the car to?

These older models are NOT designed to sit with a full battery. If the car is sitting idle, do not have it above 90%. If you are traveling and just stopping to charge, trust the navigation system, which will rarely ever have you charge above 90%. Not only for the sake of battery health, but the charging speed drops significantly after a certain point, which means you could be at the Supercharger a long time if you try to get it high. Charging to 100% will take a long time.

  • What happens if I drain the battery till it's dead?

You will need to contact Turo roadside assistance to help tow the car and jump the battery so that it will charge again. Please note- you will likely be responsible for replacing the car's 12V battery in this situation (anywhere from $100-$250 depending on the situation). Please do your best to keep the car from dying! It will ruin your trip and add a lot of trouble/cost.

  • Where do I charge?

http://plugshare.com will show you any different type of charger. Make sure to tell it that you are looking at only Tesla-chargers; although the car will have an adapter with it to use for most chargers. There is a regular 12V plug-in charger in the trunk of the car. If there is a way to plug it up overnight, you should. It will only get about 10% overnight, but it'll keep the battery warmer/charging and give you and extra easy boost. Please make sure to return the cord to the trunk!

  • How can I make sure I don't run out of charge?

Whenever traveling, make sure to use the navigation system. It will tell you when/where/how long to stop on a trip. Do NOT take the traditional gas-car approach where you fill up, drive till it's close to empty, and then charge. The battery charges at different speeds based on station and how full it is. The car will take care of those logistical items if you tell it where you are going. This is crucial to being successful on road trips.

  • How long does it take to charge the car?

Depends on the charger! The free/cheap ones that you see at hotels or parking lots can take hours upon hours to charge the car. The Tesla Superchargers can charge the whole car in 50 minutes depending on the speed (which is variable).

  • How does cold impact the car?

If the car cannot charge overnight and is left outside in temps below 35 degrees, the car's battery will take longer to charge and you can expect shorter range. Difficult to estimate how much these factors will impact your trip but you can assume charging will take longer and range will be 20-30% shorter depending on how cold it is. If you are traveling during winter, it is ideal to store the car inside overnight or leave it on a charger as often as you can.
