Faqs

  • Where do I charge the car?

    1. Use any of the electric vehicle charge points you find on the app PlugShare. 2. Many hotels offer EV charging free 3. Plug in at home overnight

  • How far can I go?

Easily 120km per charge. Usually more. The most convenient way to use the car on multi-day trips is to plug it in at night then it is full the next morning , ready for the next adventure.

  • Where can I pick up the car?

Pick up at my home or arrange Cadboro Gyro Park, University of Victoria, or some other nearby location. Just contact us to set up pick up and drop off.

  • Where can I drop off the car ?

If you pre arrange drop off then many local locations are possible. Default location is my home or Cadboro Gyro Park in Cadboro Bay, near UVic.

  • Is this car good for winter driving ?

No. While there are winter tires on during the Oct 1- April 30 window, the car is really poor on hills in slippery conditions. It is the worst vehicle I have ever owned for winter driving and I do not recommend it if you are thinking of skiing at Mt Washington or facing winter driving conditions. Dry pavement is ok.

  • WhIch apps do I need to help me charge the car?

The range is about 180km and it’s helpful to download the PlugShare app to your smartphone. Recharging is easiest if done overnight so you have full range next morning. The model for charging is a bit different than a gas car as you don’t drive to nearly empty and then fill but just top up the charge when we you can, not when you have to. So if you stop for lunch say, find a nearby charger and plug it in for an hour. On PlugShare look for “J1772” - these are slower and charg the car in 3 - 4 hours, so unless overnight, usually just for top up. If you are on a longer trip look for “Chademo” which will charge the car in 20-30 minutes. It’s good to plan ahead a little as some charge points now have a fee and require an app. But the cost is between 10-20% per kilometre that paying for gas would cost so you are way ahead.

  • What happens if the car breaks down?

If the car is really broken there is a Kia service coverage that would almost certainly end in a tow. But if you just run out of power or have left the lights on so the 12V battery is flat then there you would need to call your own BCAA service or similar. Bottom line is to make sure all lights, radio etc are off when you exit the vehicle and if you are low on charge then just stop anywhere - like a house - and ask to plug in just long long enough to get you to a charge point.

  • Is there a roofrack?

No. It is not possible to carry cargo on the roof.
