My recent experience renting a Tesla through Turo was disappointing. The platform lacks transparency in fees and inadequate instructions for electric car rentals.
I drive a Tesla every day. So, I rented a Tesla on Turo when I went to Park City. Here is what I found:
1. Electric Car Challenges in Winter Conditions:
Renting a Tesla for a trip from Salt Lake City to Park City was a poor choice. The limited availability of superchargers in Park City was a significant problem.
The electricity consumption was alarmingly fast in the cold weather, and charging the car took excessive time, causing delays and inconvenience.
Driving an electric vehicle in the snow was not practical or efficient.
2. Vehicle Maintenance Concerns:
The Tesla had outdated Florida license plates, which seemed unprofessional. More concerning was the warning about low rear tire tread depth, a critical safety issue when driving in snowy conditions.
3. Unjustifiable Fees and Poor Delivery Service:
The owner charged a $85 car delivery fee for picking up and returning the car to the airport. However, his changes to the return location were confusing, leaving us no time to recharge the vehicle before returning it. The owner then charged us an unfair additional $50 for charging.
4. More Costly and Time-Consuming Than an SUV:
What initially seemed like a cost-effective and eco-friendly option was more expensive and time-consuming than renting an Enterprise Rental SUV. Between delivery fees, charging inconveniences, and wasted time, the entire experience was frustrating and inefficient.
Final Verdict:
This experience with Turo has convinced me not to use the platform again. The unclear fee structure, lack of proper vehicle maintenance, and poor service from the car owner created unnecessary stress and expense. Renting through Turo was neither convenient nor worthwhile, and I would not recommend it to others, especially for electric car rentals in winter conditions.
