Description

Nice little SHORT RANGE ELECTRIC VEHICLE. Renting is a great way to try out an EV! I love this car as a dedicated commute car but it can be hard to use for out off town trips even with a few years of experience under my belt. Mileage per charge varies, the listed range of 84 miles is reasonably accurate for mixed driving in warm weather. However, range for an out of town trip at 70MPH will be less than 60 miles. And on cold winter days 40 miles can be pushing it. This car is not recommended for those who are not interested in trying out an EV.

Faqs

  • I'm nervous about driving an EV. Can you help?

If you've ever driven a car with a push button start the LEAF is no different. The feel behind the wheel is not significantly different from driving an Internal Combustion Engine (ICE) vehicle. Range anxiety however is normal when starting out with an electric vehicle. You do need to pay more attention to your range than you do with an ICE. This is in part because the range is less (84 miles vs 300 miles for the typical ICE), partially because it takes longer to "fill up" (fast chargers will get you back to a full charge in 30 minutes, longer on a Level 1 and Level 2 charger) and partially because range varies (most notably based on driving speed & temperature). The following is an example of what your driving experience might look like: Starting from the MSP airport (South Centeral) a drive to the University of Minnesota (Centeral) will consume approximately 12% of the battery capacity. You can charge in the ramps at the University (and recover that 12% in about an hour) or hit the CHAdeMO quick charger at The Commons (full charge in ~30 minutes). I will provide a written tip sheet for EV driving when you arrive or can provide this by e-mail on request.

  • Where can I learn more about driving an EV?

The following apps are useful in understanding the LEAF before you rent: *PlugShare: find chargers, for Android, IOS and web (www.plugshare.com) *Nissan Leaf Range Estimator: estimates range based on trip parameters, for Android Only. *LEAF Energy - For The Nissan LEAF: same as above for IOS Only *Many Changing stations require apps to enable the chargers, I've used ChargePoint & GreenLots.

Fantastic time! We so enjoyed the Leaf, and it in fact convinced us to buy one for ourselves. We had a very ambitious trip planned to take the leaf to relatively rural parts of Minnesota, and it went fantastic, with all of Brian's tremendous help. We are already planning to rent from Brian again when we come back to Minnesota!
