Can this car be driven on the Back Road from Hana?
This car will easily and enjoyably take you anywhere on the island, EXCEPT the “Back Road” to Hana. The main road to Hana is very pleasant with an abundance of interesting things to do along the way. But, this car will not survive the Back Road from Hana and emergency services are limited if any. This road is intermittent and poorly maintained. Four wheel drive is required. There are many unannounced days when this route is not passable at all.

If you’re debating if you should or shouldn’t rent this car just do it! It was perfect for us as a couple, we were able to fit everywhere and maneuver around so easily. The car has great AC and is great on fuel plus Terry was so laid back when it came to the rental. Only recommendation would be to bring an aux adapter and the cord if you have an iPhone since the car doesn’t have Bluetooth and maybe a vent phone mount.
