Gary and his son were great guys. They were easy to communicate with when I had any questions. Nate, Gary’s son, did an excellent job explaining everything to me about Turo. The mustang was exactly how it looked in pictures. I have no complaints dealing with these folks at Freedom Motors in Gulfport.

I recently had car trouble while out of state and dropped off my car at the dealership in Biloxi, MS. Apparently due to the computer chip shortage, the dealership had no available loaner cars and no rental cars were available for the four days necessary to make repairs to my car. So, my wife suggested using TURO. I had not heard of it but because I was in need of transportation, I agreed. I picked up the car at a used car lot. The owner did not greet me but instead sent his son out to handle the transaction. The car was a seven year old car with over 105,000 miles on it. The car appeared to have been sitting on their lot for a while because it was dusty and had a sun faded “As is” warranty sticker on the passenger door. I took photographs with my phone of all four sides of the car as I customarily do with rental cars (I have heard others tell horror stories of rental car companies making false damage claims). The owner’s son also took photographs of all four sides of the car as required by the TURO app. In addition, I took closeups of what I considered large paint chips on the passenger door and pointed them out to the owner’s son. Because the car had only an eighth of a tank of gas, I filled up at a gas station a few blocks away that the owner’s son pointed out to me. I returned the car on time, with more gas in the tank that when I picked up the car and with a fraction of the maximum miles used pursuant to the contract. The owner’s son started out our conversation by stating that the car was dirty and he asked if I had taken the car off road. I informed him that I had only been on paved roads but it had rained briefly on the car on one of the days I drove it. In retrospect, I realize he was laying the groundwork for his attempted shakedown. He then squatted down and pointed out the abrasion on the black rubber spoiler on the bottom of the front of the car. I assured him that I did not cause the damage. I would think that a seven year old car with over 105,000 miles would have a few bumps and bruises. I left the dealership and later l received an email and telephone call Informing me that the owner had made a fraudulent claim against me. Included in the email was a closeup photograph of the damage, which I don’t deny existed, only that I caused it. I noticed that not included in the email was the owner’s son’s photograph of the front of the car that he took on the day I picked up the car. Undoubtedly, if it showed that the front spoiler was undamaged prior to me driving the car, he would have included in in his attempt to extort money from me. The $79/day for a seven year old car with over 105,000 miles on it is more than I have paid for most of the late model rental cars that I have driven in my career. Although I gladly paid that price because of the scarcity of available cars at that time, I consider it price gouging. I will likely not use TURO again and will certainly not do business with this owner again because of this experience.
