Description

Because this is a manual, read the drive test instructions on my website whose link Turo made me remove. Also, check my profile for booking rules. I won't feel bad about cancelling your trip last minute if you've violated them, so it's in your interest to cooperate. The Insight is now a Turo legend. One of the oldest cars on Turo and running better than ever. It has a new Bumblebee BeeMax battery installed March 2021. Optima Yellowtop 12V battery. The car is mechanically sound, I drive it all the time and trust it for cross country trips. Cosmetically, there's a hood dent pending repair, and the plastic roof molding pieces got brittle with age and aren't there anymore. Someday, I'll see if I can make carbon fiber replacements, but it's not a priority for me because the car works just fine as is. HALF A CAR - half the seats (only 2 seats!) - half the engine - half the weight - half the fuel consumption - twice the value This is the most fuel-efficient car ever sold in America. It's rated at 70 mpg on the highway, but is getting 55 - 60 this summer (2017) when I drive it. Renters have ranged from 46 mpg to 74 mpg. The car redefines the term "high performance". A Porsche Carrera GT is loud, rough, and requires retraining of how to use a clutch, but it's still a great car. Be aware that the Insight also sacrifices driver comforts to achieve high performance. When I drive more than a few hours at a time, I wear Westone WR20's to turn the car into a Lexus. ;) Buy a pair, they're like sunglasses for your ears. MANUAL TRANSMISSION I rebuilt the transmission in this car to fix the synchros so renters no longer have to double clutch. That said, please don't downshift to first gear while moving and be gentle with the shifter, particularly for second gear. I will take you for a test ride to make sure you actually are an expert at driving with a manual transmission. EXTRAS I installed nice speakers and an HD radio / CD player with USB/iPhone and aux inputs.

Guidelines

No downshifting to 1st gear while moving. Shifts to 2nd must be gentle to avoid chipping the double-cone synchro. Because this is a manual, read the drive test instructions: 1. Have a friendly face as your profile photo. 2. Tell the host why you're renting. 3. Tell me if you can drive a manual, if you can't and would like to learn (free lessons), and whether you have a preference. 4. Be flexible with your trip times and vehicle. 5. Give hosts your arrival plans. 6. Show up on time. 7. Allow 10 - 15 minutes for photos, pre-trip inspection, and an overview of how to operate the car. 8. Call the host right away if you have any issues during your trip. 9. Communicate your return plans. 10. Bring the car back clean and refuelled. 11. If there's damage, tell me about it. 12. Pay your parking tickets right away. 13. Write a review. 14. Check the toll bill for accuracy and approve it. 15. Call me next time you need a car. 16. If you're renting as a group, the driver shouldn't pay.

Faqs

  • Why are you so strict about arrival time?

One of the biggest operating costs of Turo is meeting renters. Some renters make it very easy, others are difficult. I rent to everyone, don't discriminate based on any perception of how difficult a renter will be to serve. That's only possible if I can charge for inconvenience, damage, smoking, etc. By insisting on promptness, I get high quality renters who are successful in life because they make things easy for everyone they interact with. And you get clean, well-maintained cars, promptly at your scheduled pickup time. It beats waiting at the rental counter at Hertz. This car uses the EZ-Pass transponder number 02103128928. Turo suggests confirming the transponder number before your trip.

  • What skills do you check in your manual transmission checkride?

    1. You're able to launch the car without excessive clutch slippage. Keep it below 1500 rpm, engage the clutch fully by 8 mph. 2. You remove your foot from the clutch pedal, move it to the dead pedal when you're not actively shifting or starting the car. 3. You never rest your hand on the shift lever. Finish your shift and move your hand back to the steering wheel. Leaving your hand on the shifter wears out the shift forks, eventually making the transmission sloppy. 4. You shift gently, allowing time for the gears to synchronize. No "power shifting". The shift lever isn't a switch, it physically actuates a complicated mechanism. 5. No downshifts to first gear. Go into first from neutral when the car is stopped or under 5 mph.

Great service! Used it all around town to refresh my manual driving. Just let Charvak know what your intentions are, he’ll be happy to help!

Charvak is the best! He’s so knowledgeable about all his cars and drove around with me a bit to give me some tips before I took it out. 10/10 recommend renting from him or taking lessons from him!

A classic. Tons of noise as designed because it's a very light car, plus some creaks and rattles since it's old & well used. So not the best car for long freeway drives but I did get 60 mpg without trying. Steering is lovely and you sit very low to the ground, so fun to toss around rotaries. The host is super nice and enthusiastic, especially if you show genuine interest in the car.

Charvak was very responsive and accommodating. The car actually performed quite well. Not the most comfortable for longer rides but the gas mileage is hard to beat!
