I’ll start by saying I wouldn’t wish this experience on my enemy. On 7/28/19 I arrived at the pick up location at 5:30pm only to find the car was very dirty both inside and outside. After requesting they clean the rental vehicle the seller reluctantly cleaned the vehicle while I waiting for about another hour. I then pointed out that the paint stripping pretty bad off the roof of the vehicle and that there were loose wires dangling down beneath the dashboard and some by the brake pedal which I thought was dangerous. The seller advised me to tape the wires up as they have done before which I thought was pretty crazy. I started the car and it sounded extremely loud for a Smart in my opinion. I asked the seller about the condition the vehicle was in and they assured me the vehicle was ok. As I started driving it I noticed the vehicle would struggle to shift gears getting even louder as the car shivered to make it to the next gear. I wondered if the car had transmission issues, but I also said to myself, I got this car through a reputable company Toro so I continued to give the vehicle the benefit of the doubt(which I found out later talking to a Smart car owner that there was something wrong and it shouldn’t sound like that). I had plans to drive the car to Macon which is about a little more than 2 hours from where I live. On my way there I was pulled over by the police. They told me my left tail light was out and let me go with s warning once I showed them my Toro app and that I just rented the vehicle. The cop then said to me “Who the heck would rent someone a car with a tail light out?”. I then knew I wasn’t going to make it to Macon, because I needed to be in Macon first thing in the morning and I didn’t want to chance driving so far with no tail light. Not being able to taking this multiple day trip when I was supposed to leave stopped me from making a good amount of money. The next day 7/29/19 I messaged the seller and told them what was going on with the vehicle, the seller admitted that they hadn’t even seen the vehicle before, apologized and told me they would do a mutual cancelation and would rent me another car at a discounted prize. I would have thought the seller would have done an even exchange even if the new vehicle was normally more expensive like they would do at a car rental place. I was told they had a C Class Benz that was a lot more expensive and a Prius he could give me for $61 which is higher than all the other Prius’s I’ve seen listed on Toro for that type of vehicle so I told him that having to find another vehicle and pay for an Uber from his location anger dropping the vehicle off and go to another pick up location would even further inconvenience me, but I’ll do what I’ll gotta do. I was then told to come drop of the vehicle tomorrow, because they had left the shop where they keep there vehicles already and that they would be there all day tomorrow up until 8pm. So I then had to drive the car back to Lawrenceville where I live. The next day 7/30/19 I had to deal with an unexpected medical issue downtown and couldn’t make it to the sellers place in time. I messaged the seller and spoke to on the phone with the seller and they were assured me that I they were totally fine with me bringing in the vehicle the next day and still do a mutual cancellation refunding me all the money for my entire trip. On 7/31/19 I messaged the seller notifying them that I was coming to drop off the vehicle at about 6:30pm. I received a call from the seller asking me to just bring it tomorrow and he would still do the mutual cancellation as we discussed and if get a full refund. I asked about maybe renting a CLS I saw they had listed on Toro and I was told he’d give me a $15 per day discount for all the inconvenience caused to me. He said they had already left and to just come back tomorrow and we’ll do it. I asked how we would do it and the seller said we will mutually cancel the whole existing trip refunding you all your money and then do a new booking for the CLS. I asked when should I come and I was told again any time before 8pm. I work a lot especially during the day and my hours can be extremely demanding so it’s easier for me to go in the early evening rather than the morning or afternoon so I said ok I’ll come around 6:30. I was told ok. I pull up at 6:40pm 8/1/19 and they weren’t there again. I messaged the seller and was told someone would be there in 2min. I waiting and someone did come. The seller told they would send a message saying that we were doing a mutual cancellation which would mean I’d get a full refund on the trip so Toro would know what we discussed and that I should just book the CLS. They sent the message on Toro, but I called to confirm this with Toro before I booked the CLS the Toro cancellation department told me they can’t refund the whole trip while it’s already in progress and I had to speak to a different department. The call got disconnected. I then got a call from a woman who said I’d been speaking to her husband and that she would only do an exchange and didn’t know anything about a mutual cancellation. I then called a Toro back and got the call escalated to the proper department. I started getting texts to my phone from the husband saying don’t worry about the mutual cancellation and getting a refund through Toro and that the seller would refund me directly. I didn’t feel comfortable so I said no let’s just do it all through Toro, but he insisted we do it the way he said. He then tried to get me to tell Toro I was just ending the trip early which I refused to do. I guess his wife disagreed with the mutual cancelation after he already confirmed it with me and through the Toro messenger. I can understand if they have an internal difference in opinion, but that should have no bearing upon what was agreed to. He then told me there was 400 miles on the car and that I had been driving it. I told him of course it has that many miles on it, because I had to drive it back and fourth from Lawrenceville to the city each of those days and I never said I wasn’t driving it. How else would I have brought it to him. In any of event the seller put me in an unsafe vehicle in an unlawful condition which cost me money, time, and stress unnecessarily. If the seller had been responsible and engaged this whole situation would have been avoided. Maybe they dealt with this the way they did because it’s not one of their most expensive vehicles which the seller brought to my attention several times over the phone. Personally and professionally, I don’t care who much something cost whether it’s Million Dollar car or a One Hundred Dollar car. If you are putting your name behind it then you stand behind it and you treat the person renting it with the same care and respect no matter what the dollar amount is. That’s it and that’s all Respectfully, Duwayne Mills
