I am a first time TURO user, and thought I would give it a try due to the lower rates vis-a-vis a national rental car agency. I can say without a doubt that my first experience was not a pleasurable experience. Where to being?! Tom was fine when I made the reservation. Very friendly. However, on the day I was to pick up the van, Tom was incommunicado. While we had originally agreed that I would pick the van up at his house, he messaged me asking if instead it was ok if I picked up the van in the “long term” parking at the airport. Because it was equidistant to the airport and Tom’s house from where my family and I were staying while in Anchorage, I agreed to the airport. What Tom failed to mention was that there was going to be a $15 fee to remove the van from the “long term” lot. What Tom also failed to provide was the exact location of the van in the long term lot. It took Tom approximately 1 hour or more to respond to my call and many messages on the TURO app. When Tom finally returned my call, he was of no help in locating the van! Why? Apparently Tom was in Russia, and had no first hand knowledge of the van’s location in the lot because his friend or friends had delivered the van to the lot. To me, not a good idea to be out of country when trying to communicate with a paying renter. Tom didn’t seem to mind however. About a half an hour or more after my scheduled pick up time, and a lot of going up and down the aisles at the lot, I was able to locate the van! What I found was that the exterior of the van was clean, but the interior had crumbs, old cereal and dirt in and around the back seats. (Note to new TURO users: take pictures of everything). I was hit with the $15 parking fee as I departed the lot. When asked about reimbursement for the fee, Tom texted me and said I could return the van without re-filling the gas tank. Nevertheless, I returned the van with a half of a tank. From there, the duration of our trip was without incident until the return. We were initially scheduled to return the van on July 4, 2019 by 8:30 pm at Tom’s house. Early on the 4th, I messaged Tom about returning the van to the airport, where we had picked up the van, which was not our originally agreed upon spot for the pick-up. Of course, I did not hear a peep from Tom until July 5, 2019, after my family and I landed back home in sunny Florida. So, i decided to drop the car back at the airport, despite I am a first time TURO user, and thought I would give it a try due to the lower rates vis-a-vis a national rental car agency. Of course, I did not hear a peep from Tom until July 5, 2019, after my family and I landed back home in sunny Florida. So, I decided to drop the van back at the airport because I didn’t think it would be a problem due to the fact Tom had no issue with switching the location pick up from his house to the airport. Tom’s message to me was that I was supposed to return the van to his house and that he was going to charge me additional fees because I didn’t return the van to his house as agreed. No mention, of course, of my July 4 request to return it to the airport. Again Tom was in Russia so I have no idea when he received my request. If that’s not enough, Tom also alleged that I returned the van more than 20 hours after my scheduled return time. Therefore, he charged me for the additional 20 hours. Tom maintains that I returned the van on the afternoon of July 5. The only problem with Tom’s allegation is that I was departing our hotel at 4:30 am on July 5 and catching our 6:00 am flight back to Orlando. Can you imagine what Delta would have charged me to carry on a Dodge Caravan?! The processed Halibut was expensive enough. I sent Tom my Delta flight confirmation, but once again Tom has been incommunicado. Well, that’s not exactly true. He’s messaged me several times to tell me of all the additional fees he was charging me. As I told Tom, I’m disputing all the additional charges with American Express. Don’t leave home without it! Admittedly we did return the van without cleaning the interior or exterior, but it was not untidy as per the user agreement. Tidy, of course, like beauty, is in the eye of the beholder. Lastly, Tom said I didn’t leave the long term ticket in the van. I did. Left it on the closed drink holders on the center console. Should have taken a picture! Alas Tom wants to charge me another fee for paying more to get the van out of long term parking. In short, while Tom, the school teacher, probably excels at his profession, and is likely a nice fella, he was an epic fail on this TURO trip. Remember take lots of pictures and consider going with one of the larger rental companies - far less of a headache. If nothing else, skip Tom and his fleet of vehicles altogether.
