Description

Affordable luxury! Notice: range is 87 miles! This island is big for one small Leaf! On one charge, it can make it across the island, then it will need to be charged again to go further. So if you’re looking to go around and around the island on time constraints, an all electric like this vehicle, probably isn’t the best choice for you (I’d recommend a Prius or similar that uses gas as well-unless a Tesla is in budget!) Awesome choice if you’re looking for an affordable ride to hotel/vacation rental ride home from airport, looking for an economical errand runner, or are an avid planner (to plan out charge spots), and enjoy taking the scenic routes around the island. The vehicle is fully loaded with leather seats, 360 camera, gps, Bose sound system, bluetooth, Pandora, interactive charging station map, key free unlock/lock/start, all weather mats, and fuel-free driving! Save with free parking at meters (for time allotted), free airport parking, free parking/charging at zoo, convenience of HOV lanes, and ample free charging ports island wide (including many big name hotels, malls, grocery stores, department stores, hospitals, local attractions, etc).

Very good experience. Elizabeth is really reactive and the car is brand new. Anyway I recommend only for small distances. If you want to visit the whole island better go for another car.

Renting this Nissan Leaf started out bad and got worse. As an owner of a Prius, I decided on renting a Leaf to get the full electric vehicle experience while on vacation/wedding in Oahu. When I arrived at HNL, I turned on the Turo app. where I found an "Aloha" greeting from Elizabeth. Then, I went to a GOOGLE type map identifying my gps location and the car's location. At first the bubble, representing the car was moving figuring she knew my location and was going to deliver car at curbside (a la Uber). After waiting about 15 min., the car's gps bubble had stopped, about .25 mi away. I started walking toward it and our gps bubbles overlapped, ther was no white Leaf to be found. When I move into the parking structure I lose the gps signal. By this time, I've found 4 white Leafs but not Elizabeth's. More than an hour has passed, without success, with my wife and brother urging me to give up and get a conventional rental car, I send her a couple of inquiry texts. No response after 15 min. I finally call "Turo help" who connects me to Elizabeth, who informs me that Leaf is inside parking structure on ramp close to 2nd level. With this critical info I was able to find it immediately. 1. Gps gives approx. location and does not give the level in a multi-level parking structure. 2. Once you enter structure, you lose gps/internet signal, so without knowing what level, you might end up walking all levels. This 1.5 to 2 hrs was a harbinger of things to come. During our first attempt to charge, it took 30 min of reading owners manual. Our mistake was that we connected the charger before swiping credit card. You have to swipe card, the connect. This was a Fast Charger so it only took 30 min. fully charge to 86 mi. range. Total time 60 min. From Makaha to Ala Moana shopping center is about 40 mi. with a stop at Hickman Air Force base (next to HNL) on the way. By the time I got to the shopping ctr, there was only 15 miles left. I didn't drive 70 mi! The shopping center has 2 free slow chargers but was occupied at the time. It took 2 hrs before a vacancy became available. It took me and and 2 young security guys on bicycles another 30 min to figure out how to open the charging door. It turns out that the door will not open unless the entire system is shut down. I had left car in park but not shut down when attempting to open the door. After charging 2+ hrs it was only charged @82mi. There was a woman and her daughter, with a gray Leaf, was cussing up a storm because she, too, was waiting 2 hrs and couldn't go anywhere else because she was running out. She, too, was renting the Leaf and said she won't do it again. Bottom line: 1. You are limited to approx. 30 mi radius from origination and only if your destination has a Fast Charger (unless you have 2 hrs to waste on a slow charger) 2. You lose charge rapidly when going uphill or drive fast. I limited myself to max. 60 mph an freeway and try to draft trucks and cars when possible. When going downhill I keep my foot off accelerator and coast to gain back miles. 3. Yes, some hotels have chargers but are located in their parking structure. On place charged $2.30/hr + the cost of the charge. A fast charger will charge to 80+ miles in 30 min will cost about $5. Conclusion: My 10 day vacation was filled with anxiety, inconvenience and grief because I wantef to experience EV. Unless the EV has a 200+ range I would no recommend for rental because your entire vacation is consumed by its limitations. Perhaps Elizabeth's Leaf needed a new set of batteries because range is inaccurate. I would have preferred that she had delivered the car to me and highlighted the idiosyncrasies of driving a Leaf to avoid all the agravation. In fact, Turo states that the vehicle must be delivered and returned by person who rented it. Instead, I went on an Easter egg hunt and given a combination to a lock box To make things worse, Turo prevents direct text or verbal communication between owner and renter, perhaps to prevent secret deals between owner and renter. Everytime I thought I was calling Elizabeth, I was calling a Turo number.

Great car, easy rental. Thank you Elizabeth.

To begin, I have never used an electric car before. Overall, it was a good experience and relatively simple to charge. However finding a charging location that was available and functioning could be challenging. In a way it limited the places we wanted to go because we had to make sure it could charge. (To be fair we were staying on the North Shore) Also another note is that using the AC will lower the amount of miles you can travel before charging. So keep that I mind if your traveling in the summer. All in all, if you are not planning on traveling far distances this would be a good choice. Pros: special electrical charging parking in front of many parking lots, and don’t have to pay for gas. Cons: AC uses battery, and finding charging locations that are available, 70 miles seems to go down faster than it should.

Awesome experience, charging takes a little getting used to but Elizabeth was available for questions issues or concerns.
