Description

A zippy, comfortable drive with a ton of storage space for luggage or whatever and a fun interface for tracking your driving stats as you go. Fully electric means no gas to burn and no gas to buy. Perfect for any trip around 100 miles* or less. If you want to go farther, let me know your plans and I'll help you make it work. Prepay for charging or return the car with at least 80% charge. Rentals that do neither will be charged a $40 fee. If you need help locating a charge point, or need to extend your rental in order to charge, I accommodate that any time I can. (Please note: It's the percentage of battery charge that matters, not the mileage estimate it gives you. The mileage estimate is not a good indicator of the battery level.) *Actual range is around 80-130 miles, depending on weather and driving conditions. Highway driving in <40 degree weather with the heat running gets you 80 miles. City driving in warm weather with the windows down gets you 130.

Parking details

Car is parked on the street as near to this address as is available. City sticker with zone 383 is current and allows street parking at all hours in this zone area.

Guidelines

Unless you prepay for charging, returning the car with less than 80% on the battery will incur a fee of $40. Park the car as close to 942 W Sheridan as you can while still being in a legal, non-metered parking spot. Do not park where signs for street cleaning are up unless you've checked with me first. Please send a message when you park the car to let me know where you left it. Please avoid parking under the El tracks. (The tracks drop brown goop on the car.) If you really can't find other parking, go ahead, but please message me to let me know you did. If you're not sure you'll have time to finish charging the car before the end of your rental window, request an extension on your reservation. I will probably grant it. 99 times out of 100, I'd rather have the car charged than have it back on time. If your window ends very late at night or early in the morning and I don't respond to extend your window, finish charging before returning, even if that makes you late. (If you're going to be the 1 out of 100 case, I'll let you know ahead of time.)

Faqs

  • Can the car be charged from an outlet?
Yes! There is a cable in the trunk you can use to charge from a wall outlet. This is great if you're going to be parking somewhere for a long time, or in the winter when keeping the battery warm is useful. It is, however, very slow.
  • What are the charging points closes to the car's dropoff location?
The Whole Foods at 3640 N Halsted has a CCS/Combo charger, as does the Walgreens at 5625 N Ridge. Both are on the EvGo network, and you can make an account and download their app ahead of your rental to make charging there easy.
  • I charged the car up to the same mileage as when I picked it up. Was that enough?
Maybe. Maybe not. The mileage range it gives you is an estimate based on recent driving, not a direct indicator of the battery level. If the car's been driving at high speed on the highway with the heat running, 100% battery will only give you 89 miles. City driving in the summer will estimate 160 miles at 100%. Both estimates are still 100%. Check the height of the blue fill in the battery bar for the battery level, and ignore the mileage number. Many charge points will also tell you what percentage the battery is at while they charge. Just remember, you'll drain the battery driving from the charge point to parking; make sure you have enough for the car to be at least 80% charged when you return it.
  • How can I find charging points?
www.plugshare.com The car can be charged off CCS/Combo (about 1 hour) or J-17772 (5-6 hours) plugs.

Right off the bat, Jessica was excellent to communicate with; she was very quick to respond to messages and offered some helpful information. The car itself was mostly clean but totally satisfactory to what we needed: a car for a day trip. However, we had a very big problem with the battery life of the car that made it impossible to make it to our destination. For that, I cannot recommend this rental. Jessica warned us that we should stake out charging stations on our journey using a website she liked, which we did, and also warned us that the car's battery may drain faster due to the weather, which we prepared for. But the battery life of the car rapidly dropped 20+ miles within the first ten minutes, and roughly 3 miles, of driving. Then once we actually got on the road, our battery life continuously dropped at a scarily fast rate. Our original route was supposed to take 2.5 hours total with 2 stops to charge; we got 45 minutes into the route and had to stop twice to charge. This issue stranded us for 3 hours at a rest stop to wait while it charged and we never made it to our destination because we would've been hours late and we were just plain scared the battery was going to run out too fast. We even kept the heat off, despite it being 40 degrees outside, in the hopes it would help the battery lost longer but it didn't. It was the most inconvenient car rental I have ever attempted to utilize and it was such a disappointment the car's issue ruined our trip. While none of this is specifically Jessica's fault, unfortunately we cannot recommend this car.
