Need extra space but don't want to drive a tank? You want my wagon. It has as much space as (or more than) many small SUVs. It's even got all-wheel drive. Yet it corners nicely and sips gas (mid 30s mpg highway) like a small car. It's got all the basics you need: Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, USB, bluetooth, aux jack, heated seats, rear backup camera, and cruise control. But it's not fully loaded—in particular, there are no fancy active safety features like blind spot monitoring or automatic emergency braking, so please be careful out there! Features aside, the car's real strengths are its most fundamental qualities: a big cargo area, a refined and quiet ride, and wonderful driving dynamics. It has a torquey 4-cylinder turbo engine mated to a lightning-fast yet gas-saving dual-clutch transmission (a.k.a. DSG), which is normally found only in the hotter Golf GTI and Golf R. This wagon certainly isn't a GTI, but if you want to have a little fun, throw the DSG into Sport mode, or better yet, use the flappy paddles on the steering wheel and do your own shifting. Finally, it's pet-friendly! I have cargo covers for the rear seats and the hatch area, plus a sturdy, custom-fit pet barrier between the two. If your pet is especially feisty in cars, though, please secure him/her in a cage. And please, please clean up any excess pet hair before you return the car to me. If you smoke in the car, you and I will have beef. Otherwise, I'll love you forever. :) Rent my VW and Make Wagons Great Again!

Parking details

If you're returning the car on a Sunday or a holiday, you may park in a metered spot on San Pablo Ave (west side) between Delaware and Hearst. Otherwise, please park west of San Pablo Ave, i.e. on Delaware or Hearst, or on 10th, 9th, 8th, etc. NOTE: Please heed the street-sweeping signs if you're returning the car on or near the first Monday or Tuesday of the month. Thank you!

Absolutely no smoking or vaping. Pets welcome, but please clean up pet hair.

  • I may want to store valuables in the hatch and leave the car for a few hours. Is there a privacy cover for the hatch area?
Yes, but I don't keep it installed most of the time. It's stored under the floor of the hatch area. (You'll see the ends of it poking out from under the cargo mat.) Feel free to get it out and install it!
  • This might sound dumb, but how do I open the hatch? I don't see a handle.
The big VW logo in the middle of the hatch door IS the handle. Make sure the car (or at least the hatch) is unlocked, then gently push in on the top half of the logo with your thumb, and grab the bottom half of the logo to lift the hatch. Fun fact: the rear backup camera is hidden under this logo, so when you put the car in reverse, that noise you hear is the logo flipping open.
  • I don't want/need the pet barrier. I need to store a lot of stuff in the wagon, and the pet barrier just gets in the way.
No problem. Just let me know before you come pick up the car and I'll remove it. Although, if you don't need to fill the hatch area to the ceiling, it's probably okay to leave the barrier in place. You can easily fold the rear seats down without moving or removing the barrier.
  • You mention high-quality tint as a feature, but it looks like only the rear windows are tinted. Is that right? And what exactly is high-quality tint?
The front windows do look super light, but they're actually tinted, just with a lighter shade than the rear. (Notice the blue-ish hue.) So why didn't I tint them to match those fly rear windows? To avoid the cops' attention while still rejecting heat and UV rays. You might think that the light shade on the front couldn't possibly block much heat, but it actually blocks about as much as a super-dark (think limousine) carbon film. Both the lighter front and darker rear windows are covered in a more modern (and expensive) ceramic film. Not only do ceramic films resist discoloration better than traditional dye- or carbon-based films, they reject *way* more infrared rays, so the car stays cooler while you're away, and your arm doesn't get scorched while you're cruising for hours on the freeway.
