So, this was my first time trying TURO. I really had no idea what I was getting into. But suffice it to say...there are definite pluses and minuses to the service. Bottom line - If you care about driving around a Mercedes, or a Range Rover, or another high-end car for a really decent price then this is perfect for you. But if you need convenience and reliability...this is DEFINITELY NOT IT.
I was in Dallas on business. The communication started out fine. Rasaq responded promptly and said he would meet me at curbside. Great. One of the issues when I travel is that I need room for my gear that I travel with. So I need a slightly bigger car than a midsize or full. I need an SUV or minivan. Rasaq had a Mercedes SUV for a great price. So I thought, "Wow! This'll be cool." But when he showed up with the car he came with another person and expected us to take them back to their office. That was a little bit of a surprise. What? I had a business meeting to hit right away, and enough gear that my colleague and I would not fit in the car with all four people. So Rasaq kindly said that he and his friend would take an Uber. Great.
I was prepared to take pictures when the car showed up to document the condition. As I did so I started to realize that the car hadn't been cleaned at all. Gum wrappers in the front. Papers and trash stashed in the side door compartments. And 3 condoms stashed in the drivers' side door. Um...maybe some people would be really excited about this? I wasn't. As we proceeded during the day I had to wipe all the seats down, steering wheel, and dash. I tried to clean the windshield by spraying windshield wiper fluid...but there wasn't any. So...carry on with a dirty windshield. Oh yeah...and on top of it all it came with a 1/4 of a tank of gas in it. Seriously?
Honestly, at this point I was a little rattled...and REALLY frustrated. No clean car? Expecting me to shuttle them back to their office? Almost out of gas? This is NOT the way I would do business if I were renting my car out to someone. I just don't get it.
I stayed in Dallas 4 nights. As I get to the end of my trip I decide to communicate with Rasaq a day before I fly out just to make sure we coordinate pick up of the vehicle smoothly. I was scheduled to fly out Friday morning. So I send Rasaq a message Thursday morning at 9:30 am. Nothing. No response (where as at the beginning of the trip he responded with in an hour). I sent him another message that evening reiterating that I needed him (or someone) to meet me at curbside at DFW at 7am in order for me to process all the gear I had and make my flight in time. Nothing. No response. 30 minutes later I send another message. I call his number. It goes directly to voicemail saying that this user has not set up his voice mail and is unavailable.
At this point I'm getting really worried. No communication to pick up the car. Nothing. 6:19 pm I send another message. 7:55 pm another message. Nothing. It's now the morning of my flight and still no response from Rasaq. So now I'm stressed wondering how in the world I'm going to hand this car off...and also wondering if I'm going to make my flight. This sucks.
Then I have the idea of texting the number that wouldn't pick up, just in case. No response. I drive to the airport and as I'm sitting at the curb wondering what to do I get a message response in the Turbo app...FINALLY. The message says that he is currently out of the country and I need to call his friend at this number. I call the first number. No answer. I call the second number. A voice answers. He has no clue about what is going on...but is willing to come get the car. To make a long story longer...He finally shows up AN HOUR LATER at curbside. We make the hand off.
I did make my flight. But...
Was the car an SUV Merdedes? Check. Did it drive well? Check.
I honestly will NEVER USE TURO AGAIN. Never.
I found myself dreaming about the amazing rental car companies that allow me to drop my car off at their site whenever it's convenient for me...not stressing about whether I'm going to make it in time to hit my flight or not. Not having to call random people that I don't know...trying to track them down to see if my car will get picked up. Not wondering if I'm going to be asked to drop the owner off at their home or business because they didn't have enough forethought to plan and schedule the details to make the experience convenient for the person renting the car...not the owner. I also found myself missing the cleanliness of the vehicles I drive when I use a major car rental company.
It never occurred to me that I would long for these conveniences and reliabilities when renting from a company. But now I know.
On one hand I feel badly that I'm writing this review. And on the other hand, I want other people to know EXACTLY what they're getting in to when they rent from this type of service. It's hit or miss. Kind of like AirBnB.
(Side note - if I know I'm going to be traveling out of town while someone is renting my car...I would be extra anal about communicating all the details of drop off with the person renting the vehicle and the person I was making the hand off to. You would just think that's common sense, right? Wrong.)
Oddly enough, I was meeting with someone during my stay in Dallas and I asked if they'd ever rented from Turo before. They responded, "Yes! It's the best! It was a great experience and it was so affordable."
Rasaq came through when I was in a bind. Someone cancelled on me last minute, and he made his vehicle available right away. Handoff was a breeze, and the vehicle was a joy to drive. Will definitely look him up again next time I'm back in the area.
This trip could not have been any better. Rasaq and his partner were great and when I needed to return the car early they were able to accommodate my request. Highly recommend renting from them. The car was in great condition and very fun to drive.
