TBL's listing was an incredible price for what looked to be an X3 in great condition. Through correspondence three days prior, we had arranged via Turo messages that I was to meet them at the Country Inn and Suites at 8:30 AM for car pickup. I also requested a trip change which was confirmed by TBL for the new time, 8:30 AM. My trip details had changed twice due to flights and I thought (*after reviewing my message history, thought correctly) that I had communicated the when and where I was to meet the car. The "where" was actually TBL's preference: the hotel at which David, the owner, had procured a room to run his side of the business.
I received a voicemail from the owner at 5:00 AM the morning-of asking me to call him to "sort out the details". I return his call at 8:00 AM and he does not answer.
I arrive at 8:25 AM in an Uber, see what I think is the vehicle with its window down, covered in salt/snow/mud film, and send a message to David asking him where he is. No answer. I then proceed to call him five times and, after the first call (which rings), every subsequent call goes straight to voicemail. I leave a voicemail and call the other number which belongs to the other partner, his son.
His son, the second member of TBL, tells me to enter the vehicle and search for the keys. It is 8:45 AM at this point. There are none and I feel weird entering a vehicle that I am not positive is my Turo rental as I have been given no license plate information. I am then told to walk around the Country Inn and Suites and look for David in a dealership Kia because he might be sleeping in that. Ridiculous, I know. No joy, David is not sleeping in a gold-colored Kia.
David's son then instructs me to check with the hotel to see if David is inside. The hotel tells me that he checked out and I start contacting car rental agencies because we have a ski lesson in two hours.
I receive a call back from David's son, who is not in Denver, telling me that David is in room 229 and to "knock on the door to wake him up". I do so because I need a car and don't have the time to waste on going to the airport for a new rental. It is now about 9:00 AM.
David opens the door without a shirt on and tells me to come on in. He seems tired and disoriented. With two dogs in the room bottles of pills on a bed and chewed up razors in sight (from the dogs I suppose) David tells me that I have no car rental. He stated that my messages were unclear and that he decided, with Turo's endorsement (doubtful), to cancel my rental a couple hours prior to arrival. He said my rental was "too confusing" and had just decided to cancel it the morning of.
Please keep in mind that I had received a voicemail at 5 AM indicating that I was picking up the car that morning.
My app listed my rental as "In Progress" but David insisted it was cancelled. I called Turo's time critical hotline to try to resolve the issue but no one answered for 15 minutes.
Needless to say, I was not a happy camper. If not for the calm intervention of my wife who talked David down and convinced him that our rental was legitimate and our Turo App showed it "In Progress", he would not have honored our reservation.
Turo time-critical hotline never answered and we left the parking lot at 9:50 AM. Because of the nearly 1.5 hour late departure we missed ski lessons and forfeited $200 which was non-refundable.
The car condition when we arrived was dirty exterior, trash in the back seat (paper bags, empty lotion bottle, crumpled paper towels) and, a dirty blanket in the cargo space with what appeared to be bodily fluids on it. I kid you not. The gas tank was at 1/4 a tank, the check-engine light was on and the right-rear passenger window was shimmied up with two wooden shims to keep it closed.
But the window was not closed all the way as it had mechanically failed upon pickup. On our drive to the mountains, cold air entered this window which would not close and it was a loud noise in the background at all time.
All of these details were documented for before the trip.
My thoughts? The car was returned the previous day in poor condition, David did not have the time and/or energy to turn it around and simply thought canceling the rental would be the easiest for him.
Turn after-the-fact has been very thorough with their communications and I await long-term resolution of this poor experience.
This car was just what I needed. I drove up to Keystone & Fort Collins with no problems. The back seat folded down to fit two snowboards inside rather than strapped on top. The headlights and all other mechanical items were operating in great condition except for the back passenger window. It was not an inconvenience to me as I didn't have 4 passengers & had no need to use it. The sunroof was a great advantage to this rental! Mileage was also great on the car and it is equipped with an expresstoll pass if you need to take toll roads or use express lanes in Denver. Owner picked me up at the airport and dropped me off, very convenient!
