I rented this vehicle from Dec 29 to January 4 (was even planning on extending it...but did not!) to move a few items to my ski lease in Tahoe. Eric the owner new I needed a vehicle powerful enough to get to Tahoe. He specifically noted before my departure that the 2WD SUV will be fine in snow as long as it had chains. He also noted that it was recently checked by a mechanic.
The vehicle managed to get to South Lake Tahoe WITHOUT snow on the ground. All was fine until January 2 when we woke up to snow! We were excited to leave early for Kirkwood but the SUV could not even back out of the driveway in less than an inch snow. We proceeded to push the vehicle in reverse outside of the driveway to put on chains. The chains did not make a difference. We officially deemed it unsafe to drive in the snow. The vehicle did not show any signs of distress or issues. The transmission was weak and did not have enough power. After witnessing its performance my friends and I decided to drive our other vehicle, a 2WD Sonata. It was able to pull out of the driveway. It was able to withstand snow on the ground with chains all the way to Kirkwood and back to South Lake. Now why is this important to know? Since the unfortunate incident of the vehicle unable to leave our driveway I reached out to Eric to ask for a partial refund for days unused. His reason for refusing a refund is that "he asked me if I wanted to switch to a 4WD a day before my rental." Which would not have worked considering that I would be charged for the current rental. Moreover, he assured me that his vehicle is in good condition and as long as I have chains, it would be fine in the snow. His refusal to return days the vehicle was not used since it did not deliver in its promise is robbery. A good owner would be completely transparent about his listing and his representation even after I asked the right questions. The vehicle did not deliver, caused stress and more importantly put our safety at risk. I would highly recommend that you not rent from this owner.
Meanwhile, Turo's customer success is failing. Their policies are skewed toward the car owners and not their users. I made 3 phone calls and two emails in the past 2 days and nothing is still resolved. When service is not fulfilled as promised, we as customers are entitled to a refund / return. Turo and team as of this writing has yet to provide me with any resolution about the partial refund -- a total of 3 days. In addition, getting roadside assistance to help took 24 hours and 4 calls to even get anything going! Thank goodness it was not a road breakdown.
Bottom line based on my experience I will never rent from this owner or Turo again up until Turo is able to create standards and testing for vehicles they publish.
