This is a fully restored 1983.5 VW Vanagon Westfalia- part of the Black Forest Westfalias fleet. Vanagon Westys are quite possibly the world's most exquisitely designed camper vans. Simply put, there is no better vehicle for traveling and exploring the wilds of the Pacific Northwest. Gretel is a compact, nimble, aesthetic camper that parks and drives more like a car than an RV, but can sleep 4 adults comfortably (plus kids!) and sports a fully functioning, propane-powered kitchenette. She is lifted and has increased horsepower, correcting the few flaws of the stock design. Gretel gets even better gas mileage than stock (22-24 MPG). And the beefed up suspension renders the best wild camping spots in the region yours for the taking.
Mike's vanagon is well maintained and updated. Although no vanagon is quick, his rental and it's updated engine provided more than enough power to drive reasonably around the Olympic Peninsula. The lift kit provides additional clearance to provide a little peace of mind on Forest Service or Park Service roads. The interior was well kept with full functionality for camping with base supplies (plates, pans, etc.) provided.
Mike also provides a thorough orientation that makes you feel at home in the rig before you even head out of town. Great overall experience.
One of the very very best experiences I've ever had. Highly recommended and Mike is really great! We took "Gretel" to see DMB at the Gorge, but could have spent a month camping. You are going to love it!
Amazing van and experience. Gretel was the perfect vehicle to explore the Olympic Peninsula. It came with everything we could have needed, and Mike’s suggestions for camping spots were great. Couldn’t have asked for a better trip.
