This is tough. I actually ended up needing to return the car early. I picked it up and it wasnt fully charged. . The charged dwindled quickly.. I stopped to charge it in Woodburn. and waited and waitwd ....for two hours. The charge at that point was still only 45 miles. .That turned out tp be over stated as well. I made it to a hospital where they jhad a chargee present., aftern 2 more hours the meter said 28 miles . I sent Anton a number of texts at this point, but received no reply.. At this point there was not enough time nlr enough charge to return the car to the airport. I finally got Anton on the phone and explained. We agreed I would drop the car off near the Max line downtown somImcould make my train. This is still the night before I was scheduled to, return the vehicle. I, of course, agreed to pau for the next day. .... Imagone my surprise when Imreceivedman email from Turo indicating that I was reported 3 hours late on the return resulting in $150 late fee + $25 administrative fee- AND my account is suspended until I pay. Completely inconvenient tended up renting from Avis for the Seattle portion of my trip... . . This started as a 3 star review but this wasn't a 3 star experience.
The car was nice and we hardly spent any money on battery charge (we saved a lot more money than gas fueled cars). The only thing I wasn't ready for was how long it took to charge the car. It was my first electric car so I spent a lot of my time waiting for it to charge than exploring the city. I got used to it after the first day and was able to use my time more efficient. I recommend this car if you're going to be walking downtown. Use this for downtown, not for anything outside of Portland.
I was very disappointed with driving an electric vehicle for the first time. The vehicle wasn't charged very much to begin with and I wasn't able to do any of the things I'd planned to do while the vehicle was rented because I spent most of my time finding a charge station and then charging the vehicle takes a very long time. I was told the previous driver didn't charge it like they were asked which wasn't the owners fault but I ended up being the one that suffered from it. On a good note I ended up being late dropping off the vehicle because of heavy traffic and the owner was very understanding. But I think this will be my first and last time driving an electric vehicle.
We had a last minute situation where a different car we rented was unavailable. When we tried to rent through Anton he was a quick responder and was able to have a pick up and drop off point very quick. The only downside is that it takes a while to charge 100% which is about 65 miles. But it's okay when you charge it over night! Definitely a new experience since we're driving an EV for the first time but he helped us step by step. I highly recommend Anton and his vehicles! Thank you for helping us have an amazing and memorable trip! :)
Anton's Spark was very clean and the pick up/ drop off process was simple. Anton responded to all questions very quickly, although explanations of using an electric car could be improved. For those who have never experienced driving or riding in an electric car, it would be helpful to have instructions on how to charge the car, and to know where charging stations are ahead of time. There were several questions that had to be asked throughout the day which could have been avoided with initial explanation of the car rental process.
Overall the car itself was very clean and drove fine, however it was not the Chevy Spark I rented but was instead a Fiat500 so if the car is very important to you, you may want to verify you're getting what you booked. It didn't matter to me but just FYI.
The reason for the 3 stars: This was my first time driving an electric car so maybe a lot of this is my fault but I had no idea that this model takes 4 hours to charge. I had planned to drive to Hood River and about 30 minutes in to the drive it became clear this car wasn't going to have enough juice to make it there and back so I started looking for charging stations and that's pretty much what the rest of the day was spent doing, all the while praying I wouldn't have to call AAA for a tow.
Certain stations don't charge this car and the ones that do charge SO SLOWLY that it will take 4 hours to charge the whole thing. Instead of enjoying my time/seeing things I wanted to see, I literally spent the whole day driving from station to station trying to get enough charge to get the car back to Portland. Like, I coasted into three power stations on 1% energy. It was REALLY frustrating and stressful.
Like I said, a lot of this might be my fault but it would have been really nice to know how long it takes to charge because I wouldn't have dared go outside downtown Portland.
Next time I'm renting a car with gas and unless you're just planning on running a few minor errands around town, you probably should too.
Anton asked me if I could pick up the car 2 hours later than planned, so it could have more time to charge. When I finally picked it up, it had only been charged up to 25 miles. This wasn't even enough miles to get to my destination. He gave me a different car that also wasn't charged all the way, but at least had enough to get me to my destination. I am thankful he was able to switch my car, but it was a very stressful situation. I would not recommend renting an electric vehicle.
Anton is awesome. The directions about where to find the car are super clear and even if you're uncertain, Anton is available to reply to your messages. I had one question and Anton replied within the minute. I had a very tight schedule during my stay in Portland but Anton helped make it easy with the pick up and drop off.
Anton was very professional, kind and easy to work with. It was my first time in an electric car and really enjoyed it, though, it does take some acclimating to understand when you'll be low, where to charge it and how long it needs to charge. Thanks for a great trip!
Generally good experience especially for the flexibility in delivery . But the return address could be more accurate. I took a 15min Uber to go back to the airport from the return address. Anton said he would usually give a ride to the airport, but not this time.
