My car is parked on the street near 4726 North Kenmore Ave, Chicago, IL 60640. Please replace gas and provide receipt showing 91+ premium gas purchase. Also, please make sure to return the car to a spot that has no street sweeping / no parking for at least 24 hours after the end of your trip.
The car was parked on a busy street and had to be searched for before pickup. The key was left in a convenient spot in a drop box, however no one greeted you to tell you car details of the trip. The car did not ride smooth and was in fact rather loud the entire trip. Sounds to me like their may be engine trouble. Upon the end of the trip no one checked out the car instead I received a damage report the next day.
I rented this car for a day of work interviews in Schaumburg. The air conditioner in the car was broken - later determined to be low on refrigerant. The day I rented it happened to be an extraordinarily hot one - it was in the mid/high 90s.
My interviews were scheduled at noon, I scheduled the car pickup at 10am, which was plenty of time for me to get the car and hit the road. But ten minutes into the drive I figured out that the AC wasn't going to kick in after the check engine light came on as well. I pulled off to the side and called the owner who told me not to worry about the check engine light and that the AC would kick on. He asked me to check the settings again - of course they were all on and set right, who doesn't know how to operate a car AC unit? By the time I got the second call back from the owner I was on the road and couldn't drive all the way back to find parking and switch out cars in their rather painful pickup process, as he suggested. I just kept the fan on and kept driving.
I have never before spent three hours in a car with warm air blowing at me on a 95-degree day, and never want to again. I showed up drenched to my interview and had to scramble like crazy in the time I had to make sure I was presentable. At the end of the whole ordeal, I was dehydrated and sick enough to knock me out a couple of days.
Communication was responsive if not particularly good. I had to explain the situation repeatedly, only to be told that maybe it was something I had or hadn't or should have done instead. It wasn't til I dropped off the car and a mechanic checked it that they determined it was low on refrigerant. I sent photos of everything - from the AC settings I was using to the condition of the car, which was not great on top of the malfunctioning AC. The interior could have been fresher, and the Uber sticker on the glass could have been taken down as well.
The process to grab the car keys was a bit of a hassle - the lockbox for the keys was attached to a fence, and was all the way down to the ground on the sidewalk. This is not super accessible for folks who may have any movement issues.
The owner also seems to have a fleet that they are operating for a variety of ride-share options, so take note that these may not be an appropriate option if you're looking for something in good/well-cared-for condition. He said that he gets this car looked at regularly and checks it in between rides, but with this kind of major failure it's hard to be sure everything is being addressed.
I still haven't received my trip refund from Turo for this fiasco. After the three-way call I set up with a Turo rep and the two of us when I was returning the rental, I haven't heard back from Turo at all.
Would recommend renting from Oates & Perfetti, they are easy to communicate with and will get you on your way without any hitches. Only improvement would be that this car had a broken AC so it was quite warm during the day but otherwise it drove well and got me around to where I needed to. Thanks!
Michael was super easy to deal with and very polite! We reported a few disconcerting alert pings and lights that we weren't expecting to encounter with a rental vehicle (oil pressure text warning, check engine light, brief power steering failure) but Michael assured us that he would get the car checked out before renting it out again.
We'll definitely consider working with Michael again!
Easily accessible and detailed instructions on how to retrieve the key. Vehicle is ran perfectly! Michael was easy to communicate with and responded in a reasonable amount of time to inquiries. Will rent from him again, if needed.
