This Ford Focus is a 4 door yet sporty model .. GREAT ON GAS because it is manual transmission (esp if u buy from Costco!) this sharp looking car has air conditioning, radio, CD player, hook up for playing tunes from your phone. I include a guide book and other travelers have left their ideas as well. Sun roof.. Large truck for size of car. The interior has seen better days, the seats are comfy. The exterior has many small dings. Price is inclusive of taxes, fees and surcharges. Sweet little car to get you here, there and everywhere on Maui.
The fuel injection takes some time to kick in, so listen for it and don't rush.... THIS IS MAUI! LOL.. Then she starts fine.. Try Wait... as we say here.. Then turn the key. This is a manual transmission, which has just been reconditioned, so please.. Push down on the stick AND PULL UP ON THE RING to get it into reverse. All is well. Always with Aloha, Sarah
Please call or txt me if you decide on the free option of coming to get the Paele car at the "home location" .. If you are coming from the airport, a taxi or Uber can cost more than $30. There is the Maui Bus System. The bus comes straight up the mountain from the airport, starting around 9am. Check the Maui Bus Schedule to see the times. This is the Pukalani Shopping Center. Please met me by the Bank of Hawaii, Ace Hardware end closest to the highway. . Aloha!
For airport deliveries, I'll meet you outside of baggage claim and to the left toward the center of the airport, near . There are benches there. There is no roof, so if it is raining stay under cover near baggage claim. Sometimes, I do ask for a ride to another location, even if you are going Lahaina side, going into Kahului is not particularly out of your way. I don't usually need a ride. Mahalo and Always with Aloha, Sarah
Pets welcome, please return the car clean. Smoking allowed, be sure to clean the inside of the windshield and windows.
Are u flexible with changes to the schedule?
I am flexible with changes to the schedule. Simply change it on Turo.
Are you available before 8 am ?
Yes I am. The one renter who said I was not, was mistaken.

First to start off and be fair, Sarah was both kind and her communication was fine.
Having said that however this car was the biggest downer of the entire trip. I had not realized the car would be parked so far away from the airport. So if you rent it be wary that taking a taxi up to the lot to get the car will cost you $40 not including tip. She does offer rides from the airport for an extra $20 but through no fault of her own, only after 8am. If you take an early flight this is not even an option.
The car upon arrival was fine, we originally had slight difficulty putting it into reverse. We had received instructions to pull up the ring in order to get it into gear and in the beginning that worked fine.
We only went on a short weekend trip and had less than 48 hours on island. On the second morning the car simply would not go into reverse at all. Matter of fact when you attempted to put it into reverse it actually pulls the car forward. Another note it does not go into 5th gear.
That being said we were in Hana when the car decided to tap out on us (aka 3 1/2 hours away from Kahalui) We had to get out of the car and with help from a few other locals pushed the car back down the road so we could just move forward instead. At this point my husband whose a diesal mechanic by trade looked at the car and determined that the shifter and sensor need to be replaced.
We had contacted Sarah at this point and she confirmed that the transition had just been repaired. She asked us to drive it back to the airport otherwise she would have to tow it.
Being that we were only going to be on island till the end of the day we decided that we didnt want to be stuck for 3 hours waiting for the tow truck to come out and another 3 to get back to town so we agreed to drive it back for her.
Unfortunately however on a road that is often one lane we were unable to stop in order to see much bc we would need to push the car out to get it to go and it was rather dangerous. In lew terms we legitemately wasted most of our 2nd day.
We had contacted Turo per her request and they were also less than helpful. They stated that they would only be able to put in a request for a new vehicle through them once Sarah confirmed having the car. Mind you, saying this could take a couple hours. By the time we got it back to the airport it was nearly 3pm and with Turo being less than helpful we decided against renting a seperate vehicle for $100+ for 3 to 4 additional hours. So once again I got out of the car pushed it back and got it into place to go forward.
I contacted Sarah to let her know this. We just went down the road to get food and kill time.
We finally returned the car and will honestly never use this app again, their customer service was a joke. We were all about supporting local but now we know better. Pay a few extra dollars and get yourself some convenience, better customer service and a reliable car.
For some reason, it was more satisfying to drive a manual in Maui! Sarah was very accommodating of our schedule and leaves her number in the car in case of need. Only needed to fill up gas once all trip (7 days) and that was when we were returning the car. Overall nice experience.
Sarah was wonderful. My father got some kind of infection and was unable to drive, so had to leave the car on the other side of the island. Sarah not only retrieved the car and fixed the flat tire, but also kept in touch with me to update me on which hospital my parents were in and their progress.
Pros: Sarah was very friendly and her car was a great companion for a week on Maui! She's an old girl but did the trick. Nice little stick shift to drive on Hana highway. Great gas mileage too.
Cons: I paid for the $20 airport pickup fee but we had to drop Sarah off in the opposite direction we were going. Not a big deal, but I thought paying the airport pickup fee meant leaving directly from the airport. At night there are tiny cockroaches that come out but I guess that's part of living in the tropics.
Sarah picked me up from the airport, was easy to communicate with and had the charm of a real local. I should know, I used to be one. Her little ford focus was perfect. Great gas mileage, zippy, and blended into the island like a real Maui cruiser. This is important to me as a returning local to not have a car that screams 'tourist'. For me, it was like being home again and Sarah was just a sweet long-time friend letting me borrow her car while I was back visiting. I especially feel good about giving my money to someone living on island. So often car rental money doesn't stay on island. Anytime I can help out my Maui ohana I will and you should too!
Everything was amazing. Don't let the look of the car scare you, it drives great! Driving on the island serpentine roads with a stick shift is a separate adventure by itself. Full control of the vehicle and so much fun! You'll be surprised. Very recommended! :) Thank you, Sarah!
Originally, I was going to stay at the Grand Wailea and rent a convertible, but when I saw it would be dark and pouring the entire 3 days I'd be in Maui, I cancelled both reservations as I was boarding the flight to Kahului from Honolulu. Luckily, Sarah's stick shift Ford was available an hour after I landed. When she arrived to pick me up from the airport, I wasn't expecting the car to be so worn out inside. Sarah was very personable and completely made me forget about the interior I was sitting in with her conversation. After dropping her off, I headed for Lahaina and realized its condition was absolutely what I needed and remembered why I cancelled the reservations in the first place. The rainy weather required improvisation, so improvise I did. I knew I'd be getting dirty and it was nice not having to panic about getting a little sand on the carpet. Of course, I tried my best to keep from adding dirt, but when walking through mud to get my acai bowl from Mo Ono was inevitable, I got to enjoy my treat in the car while watching the rain pour, instead of having a fret about messing up the interior of a convertible.
It's worthy to note that the first night when I stopped for poke at Foodland and returned to the car, it wouldn't start. As soon as I notified Sarah about it, she was on her way with a new battery with no complaints regarding the fact I was 30 miles away. Luckily, I was right next to a shopping center, and time flew by quickly. I don't think I could say the same about her journey as she probably encountered the same traffic I did on the way. After she changed the battery, the car had absolutely no other problems.
I got to blast my house music via USB. The AC kept me chill when it got warm. The stick shift kept me excited around the twists and turns all over the island.
The hostel Sarah recommended was no Grand Wailea, but there were bikes, surfboards, and kayaks all free to use, and not mention, a ton of new friends to make as we shared rooms, cooked in the same kitchen and dined on the same table. Ultimately, this was not the trip I expected. But just like Sarah's car, it was perfectly imperfect!
Sarah's Ford Focus was a perfect size for the two of us and all of our stuff. Sarah was so sweet and easy to work with. The car was great on gas and perfect for the Road to Hana except when it would rain or drizzle. It was a little hard to see. It was nice to drive around like a local rather than a rented car from another service.
Hassle free experience! Sarah is easy to work with! The car was as expected for the price, but it got the job done. Interior And exterior have seen much much better days: many scratches, a/c vents broken, many interior and exterior plastic parts broken, no driver sun visor, not the cleanest interior, but hey it runs! Sarah picked me up at the airport and I was also able to drop off the car at the airport.
Our trip was made great with a local car that was very reliable and rough around the edges. If you are looking for a new car in perfect shape, look somewhere else... Sarah's Focus was great for beach days, nights out and the drive to Hana etc... A few minor things like the windshield washer not working, and only one manual key(no fob or remote entry) but I am sure she will get that fixed! Air conditioning worked fantastic for those hot humid days.
She met us at the airport on time both ways and was easy to communicate with.
Thanks Sarah, looking forward to next time.
My wife and I rented Sarah's car during the Christmas holidays, when all the regular rental places were charging about $50/day more than Sarah's car, so we were grateful for the good deal. Sarah provided excellent, quick communication, which was very helpful. Unfortunately, because of an unexpected family issue, Sarah was not on the island when we had booked the car, but she arranged for her friend to coordinate the pick-up and drop-off, which worked out perfectly. We were picked up and dropped off at the Kahului airport at curbside, without the hassle of the rental car shuttles and lines. The car was reliable and an easy-to-drive 5-speed manual transmission.
With all those positives in mind, just remember that this car has 130,000 miles on it, and is showing its age a bit. The interior is well-worn, and the engine is sluggish on start-up. We never felt unsafe, but we also knew we were in an older vehicle . . . which is to be expected for the price. It's up to you whether you want a cleaner, more cushy ride all the way to Hana, or a few more Mai Tais with the money you'll save.
This car really helped us on our trip, it worked well and got us everywhere we needed to go! We went on a few road trips with it up to mount Haleakala, all around Hana and beyond, and also did the whole west and north coasts of Maui. It was reliable and Sarah is a very nice lady to rent from, I am very glad we rented her car.
