2009 Nissan AltimaKahului Auto Rental's Nissan Altima1544
We arrived in Maui expecting a 2009 Nissan Altima- we were picked up in a 2009 Nissan Rogue and the owner told us we could drive that vehicle. He was very polite, flexible and helpful, however he told us that the Rogue's driver side window did not work (it was locked closed). After we drove off we discovered that it didn't close completely either leaving a loud whistling from that window and allowing in water when it rained. I actually jammed some paper napkin pieces between the window and the frame to try and "force" the window up- worked a little. Another issue we discovered was that the left passenger door did not open from the inside- so we had to remember to release whoever was trapped inside. A couple of other notes- wipers were on their last legs, tires were not in the best shape, the horn didn't work (huge issue on North drive & road to Hana when you want to let people know you're coming around a blind corner), lights were in fair shape- they were somewhat clouded out. We also received our car with almost no gas in it. On the way out another younger gentleman allowed us to drive to their lot and he dropped us off at the airport. We did appreciate the friendliness & warmth of the team, however we felt that the car could have been much safer- we did have concerns on some of our single lane roads, especially as it became dark. We did appreciate moving from an Altima to a Rogue as it was easier to store our luggage, but perhaps that Altima that wasn't available was in better shape.
The owner is a lovely man, but his brother young person who has no clue about Maui, the Aloha Hospitality and needs not be working in the visitor industry period. When this brother picked me up he arrived with the car empty NO GAS and expected me to go out of my way & fill the tank. That set my business trip and visiting my Ohana back another 30 minutes, as I requested he fill the tank & I would return it full, which I did and the owner was again a very nice man. The young man besides that drove very poorly to their rental company & I felt car sick the jerky manner he drove the car. But another very frustrating deal was he ranted over and over how "all the big guys (larger car rental places charge $10.00 a gallon to refill". He was the worst person ever on Maui and not somebody you would want to meet coming to such a beautiful island. The car was wonderful as I personally own Nissan SUV's so no problem at all. And the owner was very helpful and kind when returning me to the airport. So as long as you don't have to deal with this person from another country from Euro, you will be just fine. But working in the visitor industry 37 years in Hawaii, Japan, California, Fiji, & Australia, this young man needs to be not greeting people coming to Maui.
