This is a 2005 Mazda 3 SP23 Special Edition 4 door Hatchback boasting a 2.3L 4cylinder engine with automatic transmission. Special features include leather interior, navigation and 6 CD changer.
What's a Mazda SP23? If you're from down under (Australia), you're likely more familiar with it than us Yanks. The SP23 denotes a Mazda 3 jammed packed with the following features:
Automatic rain wipers,
Heated seats (turn it off after your rental!),
Premium stereo and Bose sound system,
6 CD player (what's that, right?),
Premium leather seats and trim.
This baby also sports the SEC package which consists of ABS brakes, TMPS in the tires, HID headlights and SAB (that's side airbags for you laymen).
But is it faster than a standard Mazda 3, you ask? You betcha! Those SP23 badges on each side add a combined 5 horsepower. No, Vin Diesel. They really don't.
No smoking or pets please!
Premium leather seats
Please park in any Getaround spot in the garage.
No smoking or pets in the car!
Am I responsible for cleaning the car after my trip?
Yes, please clean the car after your trip! If there is road debris, dirt or dead bugs on the car after your trip, please hose it down or have it cleaned, prior to your return.
Why am I being asked to upload a copy of my license when I have already been verified by Turo?
Sometimes, if we are not meeting face to face, uploading a copy of your license is a way for me to verify your identity.
What about bridge tolls?
Please pre-pay, pay cash, use your own Fastrak, or pay online shortly after your trip using the license plate number. If I have to pay upon receiving a letter in the mail, I seek reimbursement for the original amount plus a $10.00 online payment/processing fee through Turo.
2005 Mazda 3Irene's Mazda SP23154.525
Super easy and convenient. Great car, and Irene was very responsive!
The Mazda drove really great! I had it over the weekend for a trip to Sonoma and everything went smooth from communication with Irene to getting the carb back! Great size because parking came so easy!! I totally would rent again from Irene.
This was my first time renting through Turo (and likely my last) This car has received great reviews so it felt like a good bet. I had the car for two weeks. Perhaps the issues I experienced are an anomaly but for sure this is also a buyer beware warning.
When I got the car I noticed minor things like the clock time was 20 minutes slow and appeared to be broken and unable to be reset- or that you can't charge your phone through the lighter jack in the car(which I had read in a previous review) or that you can't set anything small in the passenger seat, like papers or your phone because there's a gap in the seat that allows anything to fall into the back-which made it difficult to check the time on long distance trips if the car clock didn't work, I couldn't charge my phone AND if I set it in the seat it would slide into the back of the car. But let me reiterate, these were minor annoyances and overall the car seemed fine.
On the second day of having the car, I drove up north to Chico to see family and noticed that if I braked at a high speed (60-70 mph) the steering wheel shook really hard. I began to then notice it did it at slower speeds too but not as vigorously.
I spent the weekend with my family and then drove to Mendocino at which point the shaking was really concerning and I messaged Irene asking what the scoop is- she said she had no idea and maybe I should get the tire pressure checked. Yeah maintenance in your rental car that should be in proper working condition upon rental is not exacltybin my vacation travel plans.
A quick google search of "steering wheel shaking when I brake" returned several websites indicating it was likely a brake pad and rotor issue. Uhhh, not good. I think the last thing I want to break in a car, particularly a rental car, are the brakes. Imagine being on vacation and driving around the state wondering if the brakes will stop the car as you wind around highway 1- made for a tense vacation and unpleasant time driving.
As I continue to drive it over the course of the time I had the car, the steering wheel shaking minimized slightly to be replaced with grinding and crunching when I braked- a sure sign something wasn't right.
Two other concerning things- while I was on highway 1- a fellow driver stopped to let me know one of the brake lights were out on the car. Luckily I never got pulled over by a cop for this. Lastly, the oil change sticker on the car said the oil was set to be changed at 41k miles in 7/17- but I was renting the car on 8/17 and 45k miles- Irene said her husband changes the oil and that was an old sticker- but given the other problems, I am not sure to trust that.
I wouldn't rent from Irene again and probably won't ever use Turo either. As you can imagine, a bit stressful and frustrating. If you rent something you want it to work well- especially when it is something that could result in life or death consequences. This put a real damper on the vacation.
Irene was very helpful though out the whole process. I did have some issues with getting the car returned exactly on time but she was understanding and very helpful. I would definitely recommend renting through her!
The car was fine- comfortable, functional and fuel efficient. Easy to pick up in the car park.
The biggest flaws were-
- The cigarette lighter didn't work so I couldn't charge my phone or navigation, this is a problem as not familiar with the roads.
- When braking the car the steering wheel vibrated which suggested that there was a potential brake issue and so I was concerned that the brakes may fail at some point which doesn't instill driving confidence.
Irene was very easy to communicate with. She made the pick up and drop off very smooth. I'm not a city gal so it was a tad crazy getting to the garage. For someone who is already in SF I would recommend.
