This zippy plug-in electric 2 door hatchback has full access to the carpool lane. Plus, if you're just renting it for a short trip, we'll cover the cost of recharging! That's right, FREE GAS! Or no gas... as the case may be.
This is a listing for my NEW 2016 Smart, if you want to see what renting a Smart is like, please check out the reviews for my prior listing here: https://turo.com/rentals/cars/ca/oakland/smart-fortwo/105787
The car can easily get to SF or San Mateo and back on one charge, and we'll cover that cost. If you need to take it further (like San Jose or Napa), it'll probably require an extra charge to get home, that cost is on you.
There's plenty of room in the hatchback for two weeks worth of groceries, or some supplies for your latest home improvement, but this car is not large, and there are only seats for two.

Had trouble managing a electric car but the renter was amazingly understanding and flexible.
I would not recommend renting an electric car for the first time when you have tight deadlines and are traveling to areas outside of Oakland/San Francisco. Charging stations were difficult to find and often already occupied by other vehicles. Further, some of the charge stations are reserved for municipal vehicles but there is no way of knowing this beforehand as they are not listed any differently. I ended up running out of charge and not making my flight. This was not the fault of Brian and he did try to salvage the situation.
Brian and his wife Emily were super-helpful and communicative, picking me up and dropping me off at the aiport and proactively letting me know whatever I needed to know for this car. I was able to charge the car at my friend's house overnight with no problem, but you should always double-check that the car is actually charging. I had no problem with it and really enjoyed zipping around in the electric car and knowing I wasn't burning any gas to do it! It's fantastic for getting around the city.
Brian was very responsive to our questions/concerns. I was interested in renting a smart car because I like using an alternative to gas. Brian was very helpful and was sure to give us a thorough overview of the car and how it works.
Brian had another smart car before the 2016 and the reviews were helpful but also apply to this one. I am going to try to paraphrase some of the older reviews:
-Car goes as far as 60 miles on one full charge.
-Be sure to know where a chargepoint station is if you are not going to be able to charge it from home. Chargepoint locations are easily found on the chargepoint website. To charge from 0-100% at a station it will take 4 hrs, keep this in mind!
-To charge from home it will take 8 hrs from 0-100%. Brian has an extension cord in the car that is very long to help reach a 3-prong outlet inside of a house. House will need to have 110v (standard).
-Make sure you are considering charge times during your trip!
On my trip we caught a screw in the tire on the freeway that resulted in a flat. This car is too compact to carry a spare so we needed to contact Turo for roadside assistance. In the depths of Turo's FAQ's about the insurance policy you may find that they do not cover flat tires. IF YOU GET A FLAT: If you have AAA or your own insurance, I would take advantage of your free tow and make sure you have it towed to a place that has the right sized tire. (Tire specifications are written on a sticker inside the driver side door.) You will save a lot of money and time by not using Turo's assistance on this. This way you will only have to pay for the tire itself. Most likely, this will not happen to you but just in case, this is my advice.
Because of our difficulty with the tire, Brian reimbursed us for an extension on our rental. It was very much appreciated. I would definitely rent from him again!
Amazing experience renting the electric car! Didn't have any issues with charging. You would need to plan accordingly in order to have a great experience in your trips since the car only goes 65 miles per 4 hour charge at a charge point station. Well worth the monies spent. Brian was also so accommodating and was so nice to even drop me off at the nearest BART station. Thank you so much for an amazing experience.
Brian was so easy to rent from and educated me how to charge his electric car and was so easy to call and ask questions. The car itself was an amazing experience and it showed me what it takes and what was expected to have an electric car. It was so easy to charge and use. I actually drove the car from Berkeley, Dublin to San Jose and charged it in between. You'd have to plan accordingly with your trips and Chargepoint stations.
